Technology is a broad term used to describe anything from cellphones to the motor in ones car. Technology has made communicating with other human beings easier and convenient than ever. There are more ways now than ever, to communicate with the people we know (Baym 1). Although communicating with others through a technology is now easier than ever, it is making interacting with other humans more limited. Those who use technologies are constantly attached to their devices that they are missing the world that is around them. In a survey of several hundred teenagers, 100 percent told that they had access to some form of technology (Johnson 169). When on “twitter” it is popular for teens to use phrases like “LOL”, meaning laughing out loud, or even “SMH” which means shaking my head. These short phrases are meant for one to be able to say what you need to in fewer characters. Using these remarks takes away from the opportunity to use more collegiate words to make one seem more intellectual. This generation is slowly losing its ability to write meaningful and educated pieces of literature. It has become too lazy to write out the whole word. It makes our ability to communicate with others in other places easier. Cell phones make contacting through messaging less invasive. Electronics can help to stimulate the brain. Social media has the power to influence others in a positive way. Even though Technology has these capabilities, the bad outweighs the good. With the ability to contact others at all times, we lose our potential for solitude. If we use electronics too much, it can lead to illiteracy. With social media within our reach, it makes it harder for us to focus on one task. Technology has created a large social gap between generations. Cell phones expose humans to electronic radiation and are harmful for the environment. Technology has its up’s, but it will never be fully worth the cost we would have to pay.
