Overcoming the barrier of different learning styles within a standard classroom has been a significant issue for some time now and teaching methods in connection to technology have long been up for debate. But, by utilizing technology’s many usages, a teacher can better connect with individual students and encourage their individual learning styles. A study over a new technological software, the Curriculum Customization Service (CCS), designed to connect teachers to varying academic resources, customizing them for the teacher, conducted by Mimi Recker, Lei Ye, Andrew Walker, Heather Leary, and Min Yaun, found that “at the end of the deployment year, teachers in the impact study reported significant increases in their awareness of other...teachers’ practices and in their frequency of using interactive resources in their lesson planning and classroom teaching” (372). The CCS demonstrates a connection between professionals, resulting in more interactive teaching practices more fitting to their individual students. Still, some teachers discourage technology in the classroom for fear of cognitive offloading, the tendency to rely on the internet for memory-aid. Memorization has long been an active part of education due to the intention of scholars to standardize knowledge. In today’s workplace, creativity is a valued skill. Sadly, as Sternberg states, creativity is “harder to find in older children and adults because their creative potential has been suppressed by a society that encourages intellectual conformity” (qtd. in Ye 28). By implementing educational technology, intelligence no longer needs to conform to one standard. Instead, technology can cultivate coursework to connect to the student 's individuality and encourage higher-level thinking skills to become the focus of the classroom. In an article by Linda Starr entitled “Integrating Technology in the Classroom: It Takes More Than Just Having Computers”, she describes how teachers need to be able to operate technology properly and be able to assist children with their technological needs. To ensure the most reliable and valid measure, they used The Torrance Test of Creative, developed by Guilford (1967) to measure creativity level. The study consisted of 491 twelve year old children. Of the 491 sample, 47% where male, 53% where female; 34% where African American, 66% where Caucasian.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life, whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve are getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people are on their devices is growing rapidly. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for on average about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not realized yet how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems.
In less than a decade, computer use progressed from programming classes for a few of the better students, to literacy classes for all students, to the integration of computers and technology into the curriculum. Now, there is a goal for educators to use technology as a tool in efforts to teach more effectively by using a variety of strategies to meet different needs in a diverse classroom. This will take training and commitment to keep up in an area that changes quickly, but the benefits to teachers and students are greater that the effort it will take to stay informed; computers increase productivity of students and make learning a fun experience. They help students become better problem-solvers instead of just rote learners.
