In today’s society, there is no question that technology has become a part of our everyday lives. According to a 2014 Pew Research study, 42% of American adults have a tablet, 58% own a smartphone, and 32% own an e-reader. Clearly adults are adapting to emerging technologies. Furthermore, many teachers now have access to an unprecedented amount of instructional technology in their classrooms. However, there is little evidence showing that teachers integrate technology within the curriculum on a regular basis. Schools are experiencing difficulty in effectively integrating these technologies into existing curricula (Kurzweil, 2015). Many schools treat technology as an addition to rather than an integral part of the regular curriculum and thus …show more content…
Its representation as a tool as well as an entity in some cases leads to much discussion in the education community. For example, computers are tools that are capable of enabling and empowering students’ actions and thoughts. However, the computer as an entity with physical or conceptual presence is another perspective that should be analyzed (Accuosti, 2014). The computer’s physical presence changes the atmosphere and structure in a classroom due to its very nature. To summarize, when used in educational settings, the computer is always a part of a larger social system. This includes the effect computers, and similarly technology, have on the students, the teacher, past relationships, methods of teaching, methods of organizing a classroom, and the classroom curriculum. Harnessing a computer’s potential to enhance instruction makes it a value to students. In a research study by Morrow, Barnhart and Rooyakkers, the computer provides opportunities for cooperative learning as children work in pairs or small groups which in turn promotes academic achievement, social interaction, and positive attitudes in the classroom. Furthermore, technology can be used as an instructional tool to support media literacy development. Computer technology is effective when it is used to supplement, not to supplant, the teacher. In other words, technology should be facilitated by the teacher to bring out the optimum setup of the class and, in effect, the students. This is accomplished by the teacher, but only if the technology is suitable. To use the technology as either a distraction or entertainment source is an inefficient means. The computer 's function is only as good as the function of the lesson plan at hand. The power of choice with regards to technology gives instructors more
In the last decade, increasingly powerful technologies have begun to make their way into classrooms across the nation. Many classrooms are now equipped with personal computers that run educational software to help teach students facts and concepts in a more engaging way than a traditional lecture. Advances in telecommunications technologies have led to almost universal access to the Internet, allowing students and teachers to communicate with people from around the world and gain access to a wealth of educational materials. New ways of obtaining and presenting information have given students powerful new methods for understanding the world around them. However, while use of technology in the classroom has been shown to be highly beneficial for students, it is important to note that without a well-planned technology support system, this expensive educational technology often goes under- or mis-utilized..

Technology is growing every day. We use technology for everything we do, sometimes without even thinking about it. In our world, these advancements are used for communicating, entertainment, and education as well as others. Since technology is so ingrained into our lives, how much we use and depend on it is often not thought about. Our education system is on the front end of using new technology in classrooms. More and more class room and teachers are weaving it into their lesson plans and making it more available for students to use in the classroom. Technology is changing the way students are educated in America and across the world. In this paper I will discuss several ways that this can be seen and improved.
Technology in the classroom can be a good thing for many students. For example, it gives students easy access to information, but it isn’t always the best thing. Technology helps raise the illiteracy rate higher as it is used in school. In 2009, about 97 percent of classrooms had at least one computer in the classroom everyday, although approximately 54 percent could bring their own computers to their class. There was internet access available for almost 93 percent of the computers in the classrooms. Otherwise, 96 percent of the computers were brought in to the students. The average ratio of students to computers was 5.3 to 1. Since 2006 the spending rate for each school in the United States has increased about 1,250 dollars. It’s rate in 2011 was almost 10,250 dollars per pupil. Although technology can help many students and teachers, due to the fact that the use of it gets abused by some students therefore it isn’t the greatest to have at our fingertips.
Before today’s society had smart phones, computers, television, etc. children learned through reading books, and listening to those around them. However, with today’s technology, children are learning imperfect lesson by what they see on TV or on social media. Modern technology can also affect a child’s education by distracting them. In Russell Baker’s essay “School vs Education” he explains on how today 's youth are getting their education mostly by what they are watching and from the people in their environment. Education from outside the formal classroom can be obtained and has its advantages as Frederick Douglass says in his essay “How I Learned to Read and Write”. He writes about the struggles he
Within technology comes the gateway to almost everything that is out in the internet, it opens a whole new world to the students and the teachers that use them. The outcome of the uses, if they happen to be good or bad, come from the restrictions and the management of usage of said technology inside a classroom. Educators see firsthand how the used in their daily lives influence how a student learns. Thanks to technology not only has students and teachers changed the ways they learn and teach, learning itself has changed as well. It is not only crucial to have the technological tools needed in a classroom, but also an educator that can mend and mold the technology to their rightful use. The use of technology in a classroom not only expands the tools and gadgets, not to mention adds much needed knowledge that will help students later on in life, but also brings a whole new and better way to teach and learn.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.

Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Current grade school students have lived their entire life in an age of great technology advances and have grown-up virtually surrounded by technology. It is only understandable that technology should reinvent and transform education as well. An article surveying teachers’ favorite edtech tools expressed the integral role of technology in education saying, “Although many educators had favorites, most had difficulty picking a single piece of technology as the most effective for teaching and learning because today’s teachers use so many tech tools in combination” (Wurster,
According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Education, despite access to funding and equipment, less than 35% of teachers have integrated technology in their instruction at the very least, on a weekly basis. (U.S. Department of Education, 2008) Research has shown that teachers’ beliefs, comfort level and readiness to use technology play a crucial role in its implementation within a school setting. Other concerns such as technological literacy and perceived usefulness of technology for student learning can dictate its use, or lack thereof. “Educators are urged to incorporate technology into instruction, but the effectiveness of educational technology is determined by teachers’ readiness to use it, not by its mere presence in the classroom.” (Jones, 2001) Much research has been done regarding the lack of technology implementation in schools. The common thread is the inability of connection for teachers between technology tools, and how they impact student learning.
Technology has many different effects on education, one of them being enhancing the students learning. Technology may enhance the students learning and may assist most students in achieving their academic standards. When technology and appropriate teaching methods are combined, technology may increase the academic achievement. Positive effects have been found in all major subject areas, from preschool to higher education, both regular and special needs students. Educational technology has been found to have a positive effect on a student’s attitude toward learning and on self-concepts. The introduction of technology into the learning environment has allowed the learning to be more student-centered, to encourage group learning, and helps to stimulate an increase in the student-teacher interaction. Technology has shown a shift from a focus on a student’s memorization to their problem solving. Through technology’s use, learning opportunities have become unrestricted by time or place, allowing lifelong learning. Student use of technology through communications can also help to enhance access to a career and continued education. Students are more likely to use a computer to get help because they can to it themselves. Technology is helping students to become independent.
Technology affects every aspect of our lives. From romance to business, it has shown its presence everywhere. But technology has had a huge impact on education that cannot be denied, and has done nothing but improve the quality and quantity of education.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.
Whether technological integration has positive or negative impacts on teaching and learning has been paid increasing attention and a numerous research has done to explore the issue. Regarding the issue, the question of if training teachers in the use of technology in classrooms contributes to students’ outcomes is still an endless argument. This essay will explain two reasons why such training brings about positive academic achievements for learners and a number of training guidelines that can be followed.
