Technology has all but gotten rid of the necessity of face-to-face conversation. As we rely on technology to communicate with others, our social skills and abilities to hold face to face conversations decline. Our daily interpersonal abilities to communicate with our peers, coworkers, and family are decaying. For some, internet communication replaces the need for real life interaction, reducing the amount of human contact they feel the need for. Similar to fake profiling, a computer screen allows for people to act differently online than they would in a real life situation. In awkward silences, we scroll aimlessly through our social media feeds to avoid the horror of face-to-face conversations. According to Eugene Spafford, a professor of computer science and engineering at Purdue University, those with social anxieties may find communication online easier, however it only replaces true emotions with emojis or meaningless words. Our generation is having difficulties with sustained attention, for example becoming involved in a novel. Video games do not make us more intelligent. They may however, make us more prone to violence and sex. Video games are preventing us from screening out distractions and making thinking deeply a difficult task. Our brains become overwhelmed when multitasking. The issue regarding what form that change will take and the effects of it on our physical and emotional health, however, are more contentious, and experts’ opinions on it run the gamut. For many years, there has been a controversy on whether facilitated communication (FC) users are actually the authors of their own thoughts or not. This has also raised issues of independence and intelligence of the FC user. Many people question the autistic person’s competence with FC and tend to assume they are ‘mentally retarded’. However, Sue Rubin (2001) who communicates through typing that has become independent with many years of physical support and Libby Grace (2015) who is an academic who often gives lectures and presentations verbally, but she also thinks about communication through writing prove to people whose assumptions of ‘mental retardation’ are wrong and with practice they can become independent FC users.
Technological advancement comes with a price—our focus. Maggie Jackson in her article “A Nation Distracted” explains that technology has promoted a culture of distraction in America. First, the author explains that technology is causing us to engage in more multitasking, which leads to more time spent on completing our tasks. Second, the author notes that studies show that youth and children are adept at using technology, but are deficient in their critical thinking skills, and properly investigating and using the internet. I feel that the author makes an important point when discussing technology is leading to widespread distraction in our society.

Having Effective communication within an organization or business is crucial for its success. In any business transaction, communication is seen as the backbone of any future trade or deal. Without proper communications the company is crippled reducing its effectiveness.
The students in Portland analyzed over 400 juveniles and found out “though most teens perform better when focusing on a single task, those who are “ high media multitaskers” –about 15% of the study participants-performed better when working with the distraction of email and music than when focusing on a single activity.” This study result was against most of the research that had been proven by the well-known scientists and psychologists. However, this research was studied only in teenagers and was done by the non-professional experimenters.
The average adolescent spends a major part of the normal week watching or interacting with some form of the media’s products. Video games are one of these media based mediums and have become increasingly popular since the 1980’s. According to a report in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, "Female gamers spent an average of 44 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and four minutes playing on the weekends, and male gamers spent an average of 58 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and 37 minutes playing on the weekends" ("Video Game Play Among Adolescents"). What can we understand from this evidence? The fact is that adolescents, male or female, are spending tremendous amounts of time each day sitting in front of a screen with a controller in hand.
Why was the message that was sent to me in all caps? Is that a way of showing anger? Many get emails or texts or any forms of messages through electronic communication and have no idea what the message is saying or how their tone of voice is. Many have kids who just started using communication or haven’t started at all, and are wondering what to teach their kids about communication. The best solution to this problem is to teach using face to face communication. In the old days, talking face to face was the way to go. They would walk or drive somewhere and meet up just to have a conversation. Now a day we rely on electronics. Even though sending emails is easy, talking face to face helps understand people in a more formal manner. Are these digital connections as meaningful as the old fashioned face-to-face kind?
Video Games have been accused of making youth violent and aggressive, making people isolate themselves from society, and for lowering the attention span and the ability to concentrate in youth. These claims have yet to be supported by several well organized studies and have never been more than a correlation to any of these claims, and in fact have been disproven on several occasions. Adam Eichenbaum (2014), author contributing to the American Journal of Play, concluded a discussion on the research on video games say that “Today’s video games are much more than entertainment. They are also weapons in the fight against declining mental capacities in old age. They promote job-related skills. And they are a model of how to teach children complex and difficult tasks and abilities. As with any technology, video games are neither intrinsically good nor intrinsically bad.” (pg. 67) Video games are not the waste of time that they are accused of being, nor are they damping the development of today’s youth. If anything is to be said about video games is that in them lays a great potential for good; that video games serve as tools for people who want to make a change in society, whether the changes are positive or negative lie in the hands of those that choose to use video games as tools. Communicating online too much could hinder our ability to socialize effectively in the real life and interpersonal relationship. People in today’s generation love to communicate on the Internet. Due to the incredible convenience the Internet provides, people became socially dependent on it, therefore their time became preoccupied in front of the computer. Kids who grew up during the computer age show that they lack social skills. They would also feel uncomfortable and awkward when talking to people face to face. This is because they mostly isolate themselves in front of the computer chatting and meeting with people online. Due to lack of knowing other persons’ body cues, facial expression, miscommunication can occur. They are often unaware of the other member’s main idea and simply misinterpreting them.

Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
