Is Google Making Us Stupid? Written by Nicholas Carr, and Ray Kurzweil who is featured in the Singularity video have offered the human population many pieces of valid information in regards to the pros and cons of advanced technology which is coming sooner than we think. The understanding of each source is an important component for the future of our world. The reprogramming of our brains by the constant use of computers, and how artificial intelligence, with an expected date of 2045 according to Ray Kurzweil will surpass the human brain and the organic piece of humanity will no longer be at the top of the food chain. Scary thought indeed!
My mind after reading the article and viewing the video was in a bit of chaos. All the information which was provided caused me to reflect; Wow, I can see this process already occurring. Every day I pick up my son Logan from school and I see all sorts of children piling out like a herd of cows; grades kindergarten through fifth. The same question is asked by all of the mothers and fathers to their children; how was your day and the same reply is given every day- boring. The schools and society are creating drones. The creativity level of the teachers has declined drastically by the confinement of strict rules of teaching to MCAS and the over use of Google.
When children arrive home they are surrounded by smart-phones, lap-tops, X-Box, and tablets, all of which gives them access to the internet at any given time. It is quick and convenient. The author Nicholas Carr even states “I’ve been spending a lot of time online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great databases of the Internet.” It is at the finger tips to whomever wants it, but I also see the human race unable to disc...

...ich Nietzsche and how his style of writing changed significantly when he started using a type writer. “But the machine had a subtler effect on his work. One of Nietzsche’s friends, a composer, noticed a change in the style of his writing.” Now can we imagine the effects of the Singularity movement? The change is too drastic even with some of the beneficial factors. Can you even fathom that sex could possible become obsolete? I have to draw the line somewhere and I would say most individuals would have the same view.
Kurzweil has big hopes and dreams for a new world that I believe most are not ready for and I know that I am not ready to be fed by a nanobot. Are you? It is such a terrifying thought and in 2045 I would be seventy-three years old which is scary in itself, unless that aging process part really works than I may appreciate technology more.
Over the years, technology has thrived and became very popular. One of the most used technologies over the time is the Internet. Although, it is very popular many have noticed the effects that it has on our mind and the way we process new information. It’s a struggle to even deeply read an article that is more than a few pages for many that once was so very easy. Nicholas Carr is one of the many people that have noticed what the Internet is doing to us!
Humans are becoming more technologically-efficient every day. New inventions and innovations are constantly being made. The Internet is becoming more “reliable” every day. However, how much do we really get from the constant advancement of Internet use and smarter technology? Should we look at their contributions to the world as a benefactor or a curse? The common effect of “artificial intelligence” in the technology we use every day is examined by two brilliant authors, Nicholas Carr and Jamias Cascio. In Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, he explains the effects of the Internet and technology in our society and claims that the overuse of technology is dangerous and can affect how our mind operates. Jamias Cascio, on the other hand, uses his article “Get Smarter” to show the positive effects of technology in our constantly adaptive society claims that technology may just be making our society smarter and more efficient. While Carr and Cascio both use the claim of cause in their articles to provide valid points on how technology affects our society, Carr’s article proves to be more effective because it focuses on skeptical-based evidence and uses a variety of appeals and proofs.
First is Nicolas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” In the article Carr discussed the damage we are doing to our brains
In composing “Is Google Making Us More Stupid” Nicholas Carr wants his audience to be feared by the internet while at the same time he wants his work to seem more creditable. Nicholas Carr uses many different types of evidence to show us that we should be scared and feared as well as his credibility. Carr’s audience is people who think like him, who find themselves getting lost on the internet while reading something, someone who is educated and uses the internet to look up the answers to questions or to read an article or book.
Humans have been creating tools that allow us to be do things that would be otherwise impossible since the beginning of our existence. The ability to use and develop new tools is what sets us apart from all other animals. Yet it seems that ever since these tools started being created there were also people that feared these new tools and claimed that they are bad for the human race. The present fear of new technology is illustrated in the essay “Is Google Making us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr. In this essay Carr argues that the internet and other new technologies are changing the way we think in a negative way. Carr claims that new technology is making our generation stupid. In opposition the article “Smarter Than You Think” by Clive Thompson
“Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr and “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle are two articles that explore how technology influences our daily lives. “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” discusses the effects of the internet in our society, how it is robbing us of our deep thoughts, memories and our ability to read books. Carr also talks about how the internet has become our primary source of getting information. The writer also discusses about how he’s having difficulty focusing on reading. “How Computers Change the Way We Think” is talking about how people don’t use their brains full potential capacity to solve problems. Instead, we depend on technology to do that for us.
Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and Sherry Turkle’s “How Computers Change the Way We Think” both discuss the influence of technology to their own understanding and perspective. The first work by Nicholas Carr is about the impact technology has on his mind. He is skeptical about the effect it could cause in the long term of it. He gives credible facts and studies done to prove his point. While Sherry Turkle’s work gives a broad idea of the impact of technology has caused through the years. She talks about the advances in technology and how it is changing how people communicate, learn and think. In both works “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and “How Computers Change the Way We Think” the authors present
... there is no doubt that it will be used as an educational tool and just as there are concerns now, there will be concerns then. I believe that in the following years physical classrooms will be a thing of the past, with virtual classrooms becoming the norm. With these virtual classrooms there will be even more cause for concern, and if they do become the norm who knows what other sources of distractions there will be.
The following essay will discuss how the ideas in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr, is expressed in the futuristic novel Feed, by M.T Anderson.
There are a few components that go along with technology. There are a lot of pros to technology, but what else is it good for? Many people think that technology is bad, but at this time of life, the good always outweighs the bad.
Many of us don’t get out of bed in the morning without checking our phone and going on the internet to see what the weather will be like for today, calling our friend to see where to meet before school, and instantly turning on our favorite songs to get ready to. Thanks to the 1990s, all of those things are possible. The 1990s introduced technology such as the internet, cell phones, cd’s, and many other things that has changed the world, and made communication and finding information faster and more convenient.
The looming possibility of a singularity is an important topic that I think covers many areas of philosophy and ethics, or at least for enjoyment about speculating on the possible future and what it will mean. I think that a lot of these things will come to happen in one way or another, but I am not convinced that this will happen as soon as 2045. Much of AI predictions throughout history have been optimistic and have fallen short of their mark. It is an interesting topic none the less that I believe deserves to be in the conversation, as do other scientists and philosophers in various fields.
Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
Technology – as defined by the US National Academy of Science (cited in Jones 1996, p.17) –
