Teaching and learning in the 21st century involves more than the use and impact of digital technologies; it comprises of multiple ideas and practices coming together in order to re-bundle learning and teaching that will in turn, better reflect the 21st century world (Bolstad, Gilbert, McDowell, Bull, Boyd & Hopkins, 2012). 21st century learning understands that in a global information society where new professions are constantly emerging, the concern has been shifted to developing the appropriate skills and aptitudes our students need in order to be lifelong learners (Howell, 2012).
Toward the end of the 20th century, attempts were made to evaluate the education system; these attempts resulted in Torres and Mitchell (1995, as cited in Saha, 2013) identifying deviations from the past that future education must take. This included the dilemmas caused between modernism and postmodernism, and structuralists and postructuralists (Saha, 2013). Students of the 21st century need to be educated for diversity in not only the people sense, but the knowledge sense also (Bolstad, et. al., 2012). In order for a future orientated learning system, diversity needs to be recognized as a strength, not a weakness that lowers the systems performance; Diversity needs to be fostered (Bolstad et. al., 2012).
