Almost every American owns or has access to some form of a technological device, whether it be a cell phone, computer, radio, or a tablet. Since technology has become easily available, scientists are asking “do these devices cause us as humans to think and live differently?” and “do we notice the change technology has caused in our own lives?” In my opinion, technology and digital devices have/are causing us to think and live differently by influencing the way we communicate, the way we learn, and our health.
There are people all over the world that have to experience a loved one going into the Army, Navy, Marines, or some form of service. Usually, when they go into the service, they are required to travel away from their loved ones. The distance can be very extensive, which can potentially cause a lack of communication between loved ones. With the use of technology, like our computers, cell phones, and tablets, we are able to communicate more quickly and often. Before cell phones and computers became readily available, someone would have to wait at least a week to receive a letter, and then wait another week for their letter to reach back home. The lack of communication caused long distance relationships to become more difficult. Because of technological advancements, we are now able to communicate with other parts of the world, which allows those relationships to have a better chance of survival. Having said that, the increasing accessibility to apps such as FaceTime, Skype, etc. has reduced human contact and, caused the cultural class of young people to lack people skills. People without long distance relationships are using FaceTime, Skype, and other video chatting options as supplements for human interaction. The upcoming ...

Instead, people are now using forms of social media to interact with each other, but their interactions are not always positive. Cyberbullying is slowly increasing because so many people are using new media as a way to communicate. Since technology is on a rise, the need for books has declined, which has created a less formal way of communicating in terms of literacy. Students are able to retrieve more information about a certain topic than ever before, but some students choose unreliable resources and receive the wrong information. Lastly, technology affects the natural sleep habits of the human body because it prohibits the release of melatonin. Technology is beginning to have side effects, but the usage will continue to increase because it helps improve the daily lives of average Americans.
