Technology and media are negatively changing the brain. People no longer need to remember key facts or ideas, everything is on a computer, causing them to think in technological ways. Today’s generation relies on technology to do homework, research, and get information on the world. The brain no longer needs information on how to survive in an archaic world. The human race has been transformed into empty shells that rely on technology to inform them on the surrounding world. In order to answer a question, one has to know the answer. Instead of thinking or trying to obtain information, people know that there will always be the internet to answer their questions. Technology causes the brain to automatically reach for a cellphone or computer in order to find the answer to a question someone might have. The brain is being given excessive amounts of information in small time frames and expected to retain all of it. The amount of information being held in the brain requires people to shift from one action to another, doing this requires a great deal of adjustments. Restak says that these adjustments come at a cost, the cost being the relationships people have with one another. Not everyone can handle switching from one topic to another with no consequences. In some cases they develop Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Presently ADD and ADHD are both caused by the increasing demand to divide an individual’s attention in order to survive in a world like today. If it weren’t for the intensifying amounts of shifting the brain is required to do frequently, the amount of people with ADD and ADHD may decrease.
