Technology today has taken a big roll today in many people’s lives including myself. It is safe to say that it has come such a long way from what it once was and is only increasing at a rapid rate. This can be a very scary thing, but also a good thing if you think about it. The reason that I say this is because it has done so much for us so far and at the same time we are almost dependent on half of the things we use such as cell phones, computers, tablets etc. I am very much a big fan in technology and look forward to seeing what comes out next, but the real question we have to ask our self’s is “Is technology affecting our lives for the better or worse”? This is my annotated bibliography question that I have based off for this report.

We have made it to an era where technology has driven personalization. This is because technology has now enabled us as leaders and organizations so that we can determine peoples preferences and needs just through profiles, online programs, and even social media content. Many may agree that some people may worry that all of this data analysis and profiling this information about a specific person is a little scary or even creepy on the other hand. Most of this information is private and not kept out in the open for everybody to see. Privacy should always be your number one concern, but unfortunately that does not effect this generation. Teens, Preteens, and even kids do not mind sharing all of their information. According to this teens are sharing more information about themselves on social media than ever before. The data that was collected from 2006 to 2012 have made a dramatic change in social media use. For example 91 percent post a photo of themselves which is up 76 percent in 2006. Along with 71 percent of them now post their school name and city/town and where they live. Whoever would have thought that technology would be able to assist us in being more personal with others? As they stated we are finally in the ear of integration of high tech as well as high …show more content…
It seems that every day there are about twenty google alerts about kids and technology with no google alerts with critical concerns with parents and technology. We are always talking about how kids are obsessed with their technology, but even those children that are like that are identical to their parents that are virtually missing in action. This is because they are engaged in their cell phones, computers with work, or online fun. “There are definitely some parts that make it seem like theirs’re really addicted to their phones I feel like my dad is with his computer definitely. I mean if he’s like awake at one, he’ll check on the dog you know, make sure he’s okay. And then he’ll look at his computer and be on it, and end up going to bed at five thinking it was five more minutes. Then the next day he’s really tired. (Collin, twelve)”. With many other situations, this was one of them I wanted to show that Collin explained. We were assuming a lot that it was always the child with the problem, but it turns out that Parents also have this problem as well. It doesn’t matter who you are, technology can still take over your life without you knowing it faster than you think. Child or adult it does not matter, with the convenience of it always being at your fingertips you mentally do it without
“Get off your phone.” “I’m taking that laptop away.” Many children have dealt with their parents barging into their rooms and telling them to get off their electronics. Parents believe it is not healthy and therefore should be restricted. The two articles, “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time” by Dana Boyd and “Don’t Limit Your Teen’s Screen Time” by Chris Bergman, both talk about how parents should not limit their kid’s screen time. Both authors are writing to parents of children who they think spend way too much time on their electronics. However, Dana Boyd has a much better compelling argument for not restricting teenager’s screen time. Boyd has a much better appeal to both audiences. She manages to employ better uses of both pathos and logos
Technology is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Technology improves every day. in regards to today’s youth, they were born with all the new technological inventions as opposed to our parents. In “Quality Time, Redefined” by Alex Williams, published in the New York Times, the author talks about the positive and negative effects on technology. I enjoyed this reading because it related my personal day to day life. Even though some Americans acknowledge that technology is a part of their everyday life, they do not see the negative outcome of technology, they are blinded only by the positive aspects.
Today, technology is all around us, with computers, laptops, and phones just at our fingertips, and though teens seem to be obsessed with their screens, their electronics time should not be very strictly controlled. It would be ridiculous and ineffective to try to keep kids’ heads out of their screens, exemplified by Chris Bergman as he states, “Sadly… I was limited to an hour of screen… But that only fueled covert binging” (Bergman, 1). His screen time was severely restricted, which only caused a higher craving for it. This shows that not only is the suppressing of electronics fruitless, but it actually causes a heightening of the need for a screen! Contrastingly, Bergman’s children have no constraints on their
Without meaning to, parents often use technology to replace their presence in their children’s lives. An article by Lori Lebovich explains how parents can sometimes contradict themselves when scolding their children for being too focused on a screen while they themselves are typing something out. Often, parents use technology as a way to occupy a young child long enough for them to get something done. While this doesn’t seem harmful, and is acceptable on occasion, technology can often take over the role of parenting if allowed. In Ray Bradbury’s story “The Veldt” two siblings turn on their parents when threatened to have their technology taken away. The family had been so dependent on technology that they did not realize what was happening until it was too late. This hints that the relationship between parents and children will become weak due to technology
In spite of the widely shared opinion that when more attention is given to a Smartphone than a child the probability of negative impact is highly foreseeable, parents obsessive behavior with their Smartphone does not change. Even with the awareness of potential harm, many parents admit that they struggle with the very thought of not having their Smartphone on hand at all times, even if this means ignoring their child (O'Keeffe). Among the more popular of justifications given for this is that their Smartphones provide them with the ability ...
The role of technology throughout my life has been up and down to say the least. While technology has aided my dysgraphia by helping teachers read my essays and papers, it has also played the part of being not only a distraction during my school work, but a distraction in my life as a whole. Yet technology is not bad or good in and of itself, the positives and negatives of technology truly depends on or are relative to the user and how they utilize the technology given to them.
“How we’re adjusting to parenting in the digital age” was written by Hayley Tsukayama and published on November 17, 2015, in The Washington Post. In this article, Tsukayama sates “19 percent of parents limit their kids to five hours of tech use or less per week. Meanwhile, only 36 percent use parental controls to limit their kid's tech use with many saying they don’t see the need to because they trust their children’s judgment and other household rules to keep things in hand.” (7) That's a rather challenging figure, said “the safety institutes executive director, Stephen Balkam, whose organization designed the Good Digital Parenting initiative to educate parents about how to deal with this brave new world.” Several parents told researchers that they know they could be putting their own phones down more often, whether it’s taking a break from social media or curbing tech use behind the wheel while driving. “I know people are watching, like my son, one parent of a teenager said of putting the phone down at red lights”(14). Balkam said, “despite the pitfalls that parents may face, he’s an eternal optimist about parents being able to handle whatever new technology is thrown at them.” (18)
Today’s technology is ever-changing and highly depended on in the daily life. People all over the world benefit from the extraordinary opportunities technology provides and plays an important role of almost any field of human life. Weather it be a computer, radio, car, television, or cell phone, most likely it is used throughout the day. Shelby has experience, good and bad, with all of technology. Negative effects such as drunk texting, too much television, and internet addicts are all reasons why she limits her time for technology. There are also positive effects technology has on society like computers, phones, and medical benefits. The evolution of technology has dramatically changed the world in an endless number of ways.
As disclosed in the article, The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child, Chris Rowan acknowledges, “Rather than hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children, parents are increasingly resorting to providing their children with more TV, video games, and the latest iPads and cell phone devices, creating a deep and irreversible chasm between parent and child” (par. 7). In the parent’s perspective, technology has become a substitute for a babysitter and is becoming more convenient little by little. It is necessary for a growing child to have multiple hours of play and exposure to the outside world each day. However, the number of kids who would rather spend their days inside watching tv, playing video games, or texting is drastically increasing. Children are not necessarily the ones to be blamed for their lack of interest in the world around them, but their parents for allowing their sons and daughters to indulge in their relationship with technology so powerfully. Kids today consider technology a necessity to life, because their parents opted for an easier way to keep their children entertained. Thus resulting in the younger generations believing that technology is a stipulation rather than a
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
Today the world revolves around different kinds of technology that are used for many things, some are necessary and some are not. Technology is a big part of our lives, and many would say we couldn’t live without it. Weather people like it or not technology is here, and it’s not going away. But a big question is; Is technology good or bad? Advancements in technology are bad For many reasons. Some are anyone who has a laptop can find someones personal information, people don’t get as much face to face interaction because they are always talking on the internet, and kids aren’t using proper grammar online, so they are losing their writing skills.
The standard 21 year old adults have exchanged 250 thousand emails, spent 5 thousand hours video gaming and 10 thousand hours using their mobile devices (Lei, 2009). When people hear the word technology, they think of microwaves, televisions, cars, NASA, different types and transportation and more. For all that, technology has occurred long ahead these discoveries. Technology is an arguable matter amongst people. .In the old days, people lived an extremely simple life without technology. They used candles to light their houses and lanterns at the dark to travel, they used fire to cook and used newspapers and mail to share news. On the other hand, technology has seized an important place in our society. People are living in a stage of progressive technology. They are using all natural reserves applicable for making their lives better and easier. The society cannot picture life without electricity since it allows them to live through their everyday life. This paper argues that technology positively impacts people’s lives.
The evolution of technology has changed society in both positive and negative ways. People all over the world use and benefit from modern technology. Technology has simplified the access to many tools people need in education, medicine, communication, transportation, etc. However, using it too often has its drawbacks as well. In most cases, the time of finishing projects is cut by more than half with the help of technology. Many people do not realize that technology has its negative affects society as well, and its rapid advances has changed life for worse in a number of different ways.
Technology is one of life’s most impressive and incredible phenomena’s. The main reason being the shockingly high degree to which our society uses technology in our everyday lives. It occupies every single realm, affecting people both positively and negatively. There are so many different forms of technology but the two most often used are cell phones, and the internet/computers in general. Today’s younger generation was raised alongside technological development. Kids now a days learn how to operate computers and cell phones at a very early age, whether it be through their own technological possessions, a friend’s, or their parents. They grow up knowing how easily accessible technology is, and the endless amount of ways in which it can be used. This paper will be largely focused on the effects of technology on the younger generation because your childhood is when these effects have the largest impact. I am very aware of the subject because I am the younger generation. Aside from major effects on study and communication skills, there also exist the media’s effects on teen’s self-esteem and mental health. Maybe more importantly, there is our world’s growing problem of over priced and unnecessary consumerism. Over time, our society has created a very unhealthy form of reliance and dependency on technology as a whole. People essentially live through their devices. Cell phones are always with people making it nearly impossible to not be able to reach someone at anytime, day or night. In 2011, there were 2.4 trillion text messages sent, and 28,641 cell phone towers were added across the US. 1 We use our phones and Internet for directions, communication, information, self-diagnosis, games, movies, music, schoolwork, work, photos, shoppi...
Society has been impacted both negatively and positively by technology. As a result, every aspect of our lives has been influenced by technology. Hence, life is easier, yet it has taken away some of the enjoyment. For example, remember the days of less stress and more personal interaction, when there were no online messages, no emails, social media or cell phones. We have become excessively dependent on technology. As a result, we need to rely less on technology even though it has made learning fun, and business, daily tasks, work, travel, shopping, making new friends and staying in touch easier. In conclusion, technology has a lot of benefits, yet it could take over our lives and become our worst enemy if we aren't careful.
