Technological Mastery and Technological Abundance: A Comparison

School divisions and educational institutions are under pressure to provide their students with the most up-to-date educational technology—be it hardware or software. This new technology generally comes because of a grant or different allocation of the budget, causing infrequent introduction of technology to teachers in overwhelmingly large doses. Incoming technology is generally introduced into educational buildings over the summer break; resulting in teachers returning to work; receiving a minor professional development session on the newly acquired technology and have a brief period to create materials that utilize the new product. However, the benefits that come with a highly supported, confident teaching faculty far outweigh those of a faculty provided with the most up to date technology and left largely to figure out how to use it on their own. Obviously, in an ideal situation, the teachers and students would have access to the best and most recent technology in their classes; this technology would combine with flexible support, collaborative planning time and reassurances that the technology will remain supported or compatible in the long term (Herold, 2015). However, due budgetary and time concerns, this is the exception rather than the rule. Ultimately this tends to leave school and district administrators with a choice: spend money on purchasing the most recent technology, or training their teachers and students in more effective ways of using the technologies they currently have and providing support for the teachers to innovate (Ferriter, 2011). The technological mastery approach provides a highly efficient use of funds, providing budgetary saving with the aim to acquire vital possibly more expensive hardware upgrades in the future. The technology abundance approach of continuing to buy technology for schools piecemeal, based on affordability at the time is wasting money for school divisions and the time and efforts of both teachers and students (Goodwin,
