Windows Server 2012 R2 offers an enhanced support in the policy module support for the Network Device Enrollment Service. It provides enhanced security so that users and devices can request certificates from the internet. Its TPM key attestation lets the certification authority (CA) verify that the private key is protected by a hardware based TPM. The Windows PowerShell for Certificate Services with its Window PowerShell cmdlets allow for backup and restoration.
The AD CS role service, Network Device Enrollment Service is specifically for networks and trusted administrators. With this design, enrollment can utilize a single password, or additionally no password at all. Also, there is no authentication for the subject name value supplied. Windows Server 2012 R2 supports a policy module for the Network Device Enrollment Service. It does not come with a policy module. The server must be installed separately, from a software vendor that provides a policy module, or write your own policy module. If you install a policy module from a software vendor, generally, this would be from a company that would provide management for mobile devices.
