A generalist style of leadership is effective in being a successful leader. A leader?s main job is to distinguish employee?s roles, (Jesevi?i?t?-Ufartien?, 2015). A leader that has done the jobs of the employees, will find it easier to define and distinguish employee roles. The ability to distinguish employee roles, allows the leader to better understand what type of skill sets, qualifications, and training programs the employee is required to have to do their job successfully.
Employees view a leader who can perform their job, can understand the obstacles of being productive. According to Gupta, (2005), the number one reason employees leave organization is due to their relationship with their leader. Leaders must be able to relate to the employee and the job the employee executes. The employee that feels the leader can understand and relate will feel more connected to the leader.
