While it is important to recognize your weaknesses, what you are not good at doing; it is far more effective to focus on your strengths, what you do more naturally and excellently. Businesses and organizations will have outstanding results when each individual's strengths are recognized and roles assigned based on their talents and not only their knowledge and skill. Connect with your willingness to identify your own strengths and/ or your team members' strengths and make necessary changes. Assess what results you have been experiencing. Determine if you wish to do informal self assessments or invest in professional assistance for the assessment. Take action immediately to identify strengths and make reassignments as needed. Focus on weaknesses: Individuals feel demoralized and goals may be achieved with great difficulty. They feel very stressed. Individuals and teams do not perform optimally. Much time and resources are spent on what may not be sustained changes. There is no room for creative ideas to emerge readily. Investment in training to overcome or fix weaknesses when assessed may be wasted dollars. It is not a fun environment to be in. Teams can have unofficial, informal roles too. Some are helpful and some are not so helpful. The list below summarizes some common, informal roles in teams. Helpful Roles The Expert - A knowledgeable subject matter expert who can clarify technical issues. The Summarizer - Often, a "big picture" person who helps to sum up items. The idea of what makes an individual a good leader; a manager or a worker is generally based on what are his/her perceived strengths. In Clifton and Nelson (2010) book “Soar With Your Strengths”, the reader is encouraged to focus on their strengths rather than their weakness to excel in school, in business, or in the workplace (p.19). In an organizational leadership role, management must understand the strengths and weakness of their subordinates. Successful organizations identify and improve upon their strengths. Simultaneously, effective leadership also acknowledges the existence of weakness while effectively isolating it. I would like to believe that I am a little bit ahead of the curve on this topic because I am always trying to figure out what my strengths and weaknesses are. I do this so I can hopefully realize what I am really good at and enjoy doing so I can make a career out of it. My dad always taught me to first, figure out what I love doing and second, figure out a way to get paid doing it. It’s definitely easier said than done, but I can look at his example of how stressful he was at work when I was growing up and see why he believes that finding something you enjoy doing everyday is important.
One of my skills at work is the fact that I never let go of something once I am committed to it. Getting things done right the first time is always my goal but, I am not afraid to continue working on something until it is perfect. Another strength I have is my ability to create quality-based work, I am a very hard working individual and do my best at completing the job correctly. Something I often get compliments on is how my personal code of ethics is very strong. Being willing to work until the job is done is a quality trait to bring to starting your own business because it can be what sets you apart from competitors.
Two areas of strength I have identified are self-awareness/self-management, from the Interpersonal Skills and Personal Characteristics category, and public speaking in the General Personal Skills category. One has to use their strengths to their advantage. I think that at my job I can use my five strengths to dealing with people in general or when a thing becomes stressful. For example, when there is an irate customer, I can use my realtor skill when someone is upset. I can set back and hear what he or she has to say. If I offer my listening skills and help them in their life. I have discovered that often times people want you to listen to them and their concerns. Furthermore just as I am using my realtor skill, I am also utilizing my learner skill. I am absorbing all the information to get a life lesson. We all have things that we excel in and things that we aren’t the best at. Personally, my strengths are centered around organization, planning, and time management. Although these are all things that I can incorporate into my school work and home life, I do feel that I am not capitalizing on my strengths at work.

I’ve always wondered how people see themselves when it comes to what they are and what they aren’t good at. Most, I’ve deduced, feel that when they have a certain weakness, they find it hard to overcome it. However, one can rise above one’s weakness if one believes in oneself enough. Anuj Somany states: “One who sees the weakness of his strength can also leverage the strength of his weakness, readily, to his advantage.” This is a valuable saying because it imparts great wisdom and truth. I have found that many of my strengths come from my weaknesses. My hard work and dogged persistence brought me to a stage in life where I believe in my abilities. One person could sit and sulk about their dilemmas while another could get up and continue on till he/she finds his/her inner strength.
