Imagine being on the greatest team in the world but instead of playing for wins or loses or championships you play for freedom for your fellow country men and women. Think about the team work or team dynamics it would take to be the greatest team ever. The Chicago Bulls have been called the greatest basketball team of the 1990's winning six tittles in eight years including a record setting year in 1996 going 72-10. The hard work, dedication, time put into becoming a great unit starts at the foundation. Team dynamics didn't happen in Chicago didn't start at the beginning. Michael Jordan the team center piece played 7 years in the NBA before he won his first Championship. It wasn't until the right collection of players (along with the appropriate coach to guide them) was assembled in the Windy City that the dynasty began to take shape (NBA.COM). Team Dynamics came together for the Chicago Bulls and they were unstoppable. Team Dynamics is defined as the often-unseen natural forces' that strongly influences how a team reacts, behaves or performs. In the Air Force team dynamics is important as well. The United States Air Force was established in 1942 and today is the greatest Air power in the greatest military in the world. We didn't get to be a force in today's military by accident. The foundation is laid in the beginning and is enforced everyday. 28,000 airmen graduate from basic training every year and the first thing that is taught is the foundation. The base foundation ensures every Airman has what it takes to start a successful Air Force career. There are three core values of the Air Force are Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do that make up the foundation for success in each and every member of the Air Force.
In Team Dynamics of the Air Force, Integrity acts as the substructure to all Air Force core values. "Without integrity our reasons for service can be questioned. Without integrity the sincerity of our quest for excellence also comes into doubt says (Lt Col Alan Peaslee) . Integrity is defined by dictionary.com as adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty (Dictionary.com 2006). The Air force simply says to do what's right even when no one is paying attention. Col Peaslee also says, "When doing right thing starts to be in conflict with the easy way, or butts heads with "the way we've always done it," is when our integrity is confronted.
As displayed throughout this essay, the Titans displayed how each of these concepts intertwine, influencing how much of an impact they will have on the performance and cohesiveness of a team. Each concept on its own is a vital aspect to analyze when looking to develop a successful and cohesive team. It is important that players connect and function with their team in order to fulfill personal needs and group goals. Without team cohesion, the performance of individual skills and team ability become inhibited. This essay as a whole greatly presented how team cohesion is influenced by a number of factors. Integrity is a core value, a key aspect, of the Army Values. Integrity of the soldier is looked upon highly, and is a valuable asset in any field of the army. Twenty four seven, meaning every hour of every day, a soldier should strive for integrity. Having integrity means your are trustworthy, and being trustworthy means that your NCO can depend on you to do the right thing at all times.
Lastly, integrity comes down to taking the correct action when no one is around to monitor the behavior. Personal views can cloud an individual’s decision making process by looking to obtain dishonest gains through deceitful actions.
Integrity stands for more than honesty, and it is about standing up for what you believe, it is about leadership, and it is about defining you as a person. Integrity is based on personal beliefs and seeing them through and being able to complete a task, to put it together regardless of the complication of said task. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a profound example of integrity in action in the real world and moreover, shows its importance. Integrity is a topic that people are excited to talk about. It seems to be a commodity that is in short supply. I feel that this is because integrity is a more complex matter then honesty. It takes more work to conduct yourself with integrity then simple honesty. Carter says that integrity requires three things. First you have to be able to discern between wrong and right. Second you have to act on what you discern. Lastly, you must be able to say that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong (Carter 74). In my opinion, these steps required a person truly consider a situation and ensures that person’s integrity is steadfast and trustworthy. Without these steps “a person may be entirely honest without ever engaging in the hard work of discernment that integrity requires” (Carter 74).
Integrity can be defined soundness of moral character or honesty. My parents explained it to me as doing the right thing when no one else is looking. An example of me having integrity is once when I went to the gas station to fill up my car, the pump stated that there was an error and then it allowed me to fill my car with gas, without paying. I went inside to try to pay for my gas. I was running tight on time because I had to go to work, but I waited in line and then explained to the cashier what had happened. She thanked me for staying to pay for the gas, and said that I really could have driven off without paying. I did not think of it at the time, but this is how I practiced integrity.
According to Merriam-Webster, integrity is defined simply as the quality of being honest and fair (Integrity). But there is much more that can said about what integrity truly means. Integrity in its very nature is intended to be a guiding moral force in our lives which serves to keep us on the straight and narrow. It helps us to not only discern right and wrong, but it also goes a step further and encourages us to make the right decisions when faced with difficult situations. Integrity as it relates to our character means always being true to what one believes to be morally right, even when it is difficult to do.
Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.

When we think of the word team, individually many different ideas may come to mind about what a team really is. Some may think of an NFL team (Tennessee Titans), an NBA team (Sacramento Kings), or a NASA astronaut team with such pioneers as Edwin Aldrin, Jr. and Neil Armstrong as members. You might even think of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, or Marines as teams. In fact they all are, and they have a great deal in common as teams. However, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the characteristics of work teams, as they apply to organizations and I will supply answers to the following questions: What is a team? When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions.” Furthermore, having integrity is a quality that many strive to have because it often means that you are a good person.
The Air Force has been a life shaping institution for me as it has been for many others. The demands and opportunities inherent to military service have given me the chance to grow and develop as an individual and team member. From the age of five, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. But as I grew up, my dream remained the same while my motivations changed greatly. Once I entered the Air Force, the experiences that I had serving were profound and life changing and my current assignment affords me the opportunity to use that experience in a joint environment to shape the way that the Army and the Air Force integrate. While the steps along the way have been many and varied, upon reflection I can see that the common thread throughout has been the ideal of service before self.
Integrity is how somebody lives their life. In this life we live, we face choices every day that only we can answer. We dictate how we run our own lives, and they way we run them defines us. Integrity is doing the right thing versus the wrong thing. People, if nothing else, can always have their pride, their integrity. It is something that means a lot to some people and then nothing to others. The ones who value their integrity highly are the good people in this world, and the opposite is true for those who do not value their integrity.
