Team Cohesion, Player Roles, Leadership

Team cohesion is working together with each other and staying united as group to achieve a common objective, i.e. the cohesiveness of the group of individuals that make up the team including the players, coaches and others that work with and assist the team. Hodges (as cited by Moran, 2004, p 246) emphasizes that a ‘team’ is people coming together to achieve a common purpose. While Alderer (cited by Moran, 2004, p 246) defined a ‘group’ as “an intact social system, complete with boundaries and interdependence for some shared purpose and differentiated member roles”. Cohesiveness means that the individuals feel they belong to the group, look out for each other and feel they need to bond with each other to reach their common goal (Moran, 2004). They understand that if they do not do this together they will not achieve success. In sports teams this special type of cohesion is sometimes taken for granted. This is not always the case though and history is replete with examples when great teams fall apart when there is no cohesion. The World Cup Soccer tournament in 2014 in Brazil shows an example of this when the highly touted home team Brazil faltered surprisingly against other teams finally exiting early in an overall dismal performance. The team had world renowned, highly talented individuals, but team cohesion was clearly lacking when they needed it most and one of the main reasons for their downfall.
Sports teams are thus defined by special characteristics that make them a special group. Carron and Hausenblas (cited by Moran, 2004) stated that, in addition to the feeling of cohesiveness outlined above, they understand they have individual roles to fulfill being as a group as well as speci...

Player’s role in a team is the expected behavior pattern as a result of being on the team. Some roles are characteristic: hero- is the record holder over-achiever leader, person getting the accolades; scapegoat- always taking the blame, defiant, blamed for the team wrongs; lost child- quiet, distant; mascot- hyperactive, outgoing, and clowning.

Having all these factors discussed above working together will lead to better cohesion and stronger performances by the team. This can be enhanced by good leadership with coaches working with the players in a friendly and respectful manner, getting to know them personally including their hobbies, working out conflicts, give feedback, and making sure groupings are not formed as this will erode cohesion. Players should feel they belong to the group and know their role and working with rules laid down.
