Introduction Working well in a group is crucial for the success of each individual within a functioning group. This scholarly paper will explore common concepts relating to teams in general, and how it affects the PBL class specifically. It will cover how team building applies to group process and learning. It will also describe the importance of team building in the nursing profession, and as a member of the health care team. Overall, this paper will prove that team building is an important concept in how a group functions, especially within the health care system. Teams and Team Building “Teams are examples of synergy in action.” (Campbell, 2003, p. 201). Campbell uses this analogy to depict how a group functions. The definition of synergy is, “the action of two or more substances or organisms to achieve an effect of which each is individually incapable.” (Campbell, 2003, p.201). All in all, this can be related to the well-known saying, that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Relating this to a team, this means that each person is responsible for their own work. However, the members are “interdependent” (Nazzaro & Strazzabosco, 2009, p.4), which means that the group’s objective is met depending on how everyone in the group interacts with one another. “Team building is a way of encouraging individuals to participate together in activities.” (Toofany, 2007, p.25.). Managers and leaders are those who are play very important roles in team building. Dimock (2007) defines leadership as acts that help the group to accomplish its goals and maintain itself as a group. However, the leader must “understand and respect others,” as well as “concentrate on team building processes.” (Toofany, 2007, p.25.). It is another extremely hectic Monday in the Emergency Department. The waiting room is building up fast with many new walk-in patients. Fire Rescue trucks are calling one after the next with several medical and trauma cases. The hospital supervisor is calling to inform the Charge Nurse of the Emergency Department that the Operating Room has several cases that need beds and will supersede the Emergency Department admits. Patient through put will now be further delayed. Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. The leadership roles I have been able to take part in have brought me to the conclusion that cohesion is the core factor of how I lead.
When first being introduced to a group, it can be quite stressful trying to figure out how you and your team members are going to function together. As with any group, there are a few milestones that need to be reached in order to ensure a functional and successful relationship. Specifically, groups need to go through Tuckman’s Group Development Stages. These stages consist of forming, storming, norming, performing, and in some scenarios, a final stage of adjourning may be reached. After participating in this assignment, we as a group were easily able to identify, and analyze, each stage of our development.
Individuals who participate in teams need to be accessible to others to offer advice, mentoring additional guidance towards issues or concerns. As affirmed in the article Communication, Teamwork, and Trust in an Office-Based Practices a CRNA Nurse reaffirms that taking care of her patients alone would not be possible, she heavily relies on the office team as well as her nurse staff in effectively communicating and collaboration during all phases of patient’s care. They all play an instrumental part from making sure they have the correct name on the chart to ensuring the proper procedure gets done on a certain patient. She relies on the nurseries for pre-operation procedures before administering anesthesia. They all respect the patient's health concerns along with humanity. Working as a team has created this small office based practice reputation into a trustworthy, respectful and consistent teamwork environment among patient’s (Pearce, 2015).
