An article written in Journal of School Health expresses, “In recent years, increasingly larger amounts of funding have been allocated to promote abstinence-only-until-marriage education. This type of education presents marriage as the only morally acceptable context for sexual activity, emphasizes abstinence from all sexual behavior until marriage and does not teach contraceptive use or disease-prevention methods.” (Goodson) By teaching sex education classes it will give a better understanding to adolescents of what to be cautious of when saying yes to engaging in sexual intercourse. Telling a teenager not to do something makes the probability of them wanting to do exactly the opposite go up tremendously.
Studies show that in the past having an abstinence-only education class does not reduce the risk of adolescents being sexually active. Telling the youth to not have sex until marriage is more than likely not going to happen. ...today. Almost half of 20 million cases of STD’s are from adolescents ranging anywhere from 15- 24. Studies have shown 2 out of 5 of girls that are sexually active have an STD. Taking this into serious consideration it seems only right to practice safe sex in public schools to lower these risks. Giving students the different type of knowledge between the morally acceptable thing to do and the more likelyhood of what happens will benefit adolescents across the nation. Six main categories that would be taught in sex ed courses would be; human development, society and culture, personal skills, sexual behavior, and relationships. These categories are what students will learn going through this program. With more research on these programs and classes, putting this into society will be further developed and happen quickly; eventually replace the abstinence-only programs.
