Teacher bullying is defined as a pattern of conduct, rooted in a power differential that threatens, harms, humiliates, induces fear in or causes students substantial emotional stress (McEvoy, 2014). Teachers who bully students have usually been bullied by former teachers. Teachers who bully their students do so because the building they are in does not have any protocols in place to discourage it. It is important for administrators to offer professional development to make sure teachers know how to deal with children from all types of backgrounds.
Students will most likely not be successful if they feel targeted by teachers and school administrators. It is important to make students feel respected, wanted, and welcomed. If students are bullied the cycle will continue, and the student may end up as a bully in school or later in life because of what was done them.
Maintaining student confidentiality is one of the most important parts of being a school administrator. There are laws, like FERPA, in place to protect the student’s personal information. Any school that receives funds from the U.S. Department of Education must follow FERPA rules and regulations.
An administrator who wants to sustain a positive school culture conducive to learning and staff development will make sure that student information is not shared with those who do not need to know. It can be as simple as mentioning there are some ‘home issues’ to a student’s teachers without giving them full details. Students can also be led through an entrance away from high traffic areas when called down to the office for discipline or CPS visits. A school administrator needs to keep up with the times and stay on top of the emerging trends in education. Using simple things like social media to communicate with school and community stakeholders can keep the administrator connected outside of the cement walls of the school building.
Administrators who want to stay from behind the cement walls permanently will be sure to treat staff personal information and issue with the same confidentiality level as the students. It is important that Administrators follow district policy when it comes to staff member’s personal information and/or discipline issues.
One of the most important things every administrator should do is not forget that they were one in a classroom, and understand that it only takes a small slip in judgement and they could be back there permanently.
