Taking a Stand against Alcohol
On May 3, 1980, a story by Miss Tiffany S stated that an innocent human being was taken from this world. A young girl, age thirteen, was killed by a drunk driver. All she was doing was taking a peaceful walk, when all of the sudden a man who had twice the legal alcohol limit (.16) killed her instantly. (Miss Tiffany S). Every day, more people are dying due to the abuse of alcohol especially in the United States. In the U.S an estimated 17,941 people died in 2006 due to alcohol-related collisions (NHSA). That is why alcohol should be banned from the United States.
Most crashes usually come from people who are likely to be intoxicated (31%). Driving under the influence is probably the worst thing you can do when driving a vehicle. The State Justice Department shows that out of 37,691,912 people in the United States, there have been 214,828 arrested due to driving while under the influence of alcohol. That is a very large number, and yet it continues to increase. Now the United States is cracking down on alcohol and creating stricter laws concerning it. For instance, the state of Arkansas has created a linkage between consumption and possession. According to the Alcohol Policy Information System (APIS), "Possession and consumption are closely linked because consumption generally requires possession.
Everyone loves beer and everyone loves to get drunk and have a good time. People don’t know when beer actually came into existence; all they care about is getting intoxicated. Beer dates back to 3500 BC or even earlier. Also back then alcohol-related disorders resulted in liver damage, heart damage and endocrine system damage, and that was associated with cancer risk. Alcohol is causing too many deaths. Each year, excessive drinking is responsible for the deaths of 80,000 people in the United States, 4,700 of which are young Americans (6). Alcohol by itself is dangerous; this danger is (made greater) when individuals consuming it are allowed to drive a vehicle. Research has shown that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle moving at 40 miles an hour has a fifty percent chance of getting killed as a result of the impact (9). A distracted or impaired driver will not be able to react as fast as a non-impaired driver, meaning a drunk driver is a more dangerous driver than a sober one.
“Drink the first. Sip the second slowly. Skip the third. The speedway ends at the cemetery” (Rockne). Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 48 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol related crashes totals more than 51 billion. In Recent discussions of drunk driving, a controversial issue has been whether the driving while intoxicated laws should be increased due to the amount tax payers are paying for drunk driving crashes. On the one hand. Some argue that the driving laws for driving drunk should remain the same and not change. From this perspective the laws about driving under the influence should greatly increase to be stricter, this will help decrease the death rate per year in the United States. On the other hand, however others argue that the laws about driving while drunk are already too strict and should remain unchanged. In sum, then, the issue is whether the laws about driving drunk should be greatly increased to be more effective, or remain unchanged. Because drunk driving can result in unnecessary and premature deaths, unsafe roadways, billions of dollars spent on taxpayers due to DUI’S, and losing a loved one. Drunk driving laws should be altered to be more efficient.

Every society has its own views on how the consumption of alcohol should be handled and regulated. Their differences create a trickle effect of how it is used, and is distinctive to that culture or society. Many cultures drinking habits go hand in hand with religion, and social customs. Drinking alcohol is in many cases a part of extensive learned tradition, where people pride themselves with their ability to hold their liquor. In countries where alcohol is part of the “norm”, the outcomes of drinking habits or the effects of alcohol are much different, “A population that drinks daily may have a high rate of cirrhosis and other medical problems but few accidents, fights, homicides, or other violent alcohol-associated conflicts; a population with predominantly binge drinking shows the opposite complex of drinking problems”#. It has been observed that cultures with rich traditions and acceptance of alcohol use tend to deal less with the typical alcohol related problems, compared to the cultures who treat alcohol as an escape or something that will make them better in the eyes of others. Furthermore, the number of overall motor vehicle deaths is decreasing – a trend that alcohol – related fatalities are sure to follow, regardless of the drinking age. For example, significant improvements in high way systems and vehicle safety have helped to decrease the overall number of motor vehicle deaths.

“Every year, in the United States about 600,000 and ten percent-of all motor vehicle crashes recorded by police department are all due to consumption of alcohol.” In 2003; 42,643 fatalities were caused by vehicle crashes. Of those, 17,013 (40 percent) were alcohol related. The majority people with DUI’s are not alcoholics. “Beer drinking causes about 80 percent of alcohol-related fatalities.” A crash is alcohol related if any driver, pedestrian or passenger involved has any trace of alcohol or there is suspicion of alcohol usage. As the cases of drunk driving quickly increase over a period of time as one of the fast developing public problem, more definite and stricter regulations should be emphasized on books and in the academic world to control such recurring drunk driving offenses.
Researchers state that binge drinking can cause death and disease at a rate of 3.7% and 4.4% respectively all over the world (Hermens at el.,2012:1). Apart from this, further research indicates that alcohol contributes to negative outcomes that kill or disable people at a relatively young age (WHO,2011:20). In addition, alcohol-related traffic accidents not only cause high death rates, but they cost society % 45 billion annually in hospital costs, rehabilitation expenses, and lost productivity (NHTSA 3). It also affects traffic safety, in that the amount of arrests of intoxicated drivers prevents the police from arresting other traffic violators. In 1995 more than 1.4 million people were arrested for driving under the influence, this totaled 10 percent of all arrests made in that year (Hingson 1).
