The turn of the 20th century produced evolutionists of many different aspects in the medical field of study. Two regular masons combined there wisdom to create a fraternity chapter that changed lives forever. William J. “Billy” Florence and Walter M. Fleming founded Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, commonly referred to as Shriners. The Shriners went on to create a hospital that would change children and families lives forever. Since the first hospital began in 1922, the Shriners have begun numerous hospitals with several different areas of treatments.
At the Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City, a group of high-spirited Masons met repeatedly at a special table on the second floor. Among these members were, William J. “Billy” Florence and Walter M. Fleming. The group of Masons regularly tossed around the idea of beginning a new fraternity. They wanted a chapter that focused on fun and fellowship instead of rituals.

I watched the movie Animal House; it gave me an interesting perspective on academic life in the 1960’s. The movie follows two friends Lawrence "Larry" Kroger and Kent Dorfman, as they try to gain acceptance from a fraternity at Faber College in 1962. The movie starts off with Larry and Kent going to a social event at one of the better fraternities on campus the Omegas. The Omegas are the snooty, uptight, rich fraternity. Larry and Kent are not like them and find themselves uncomfortable but try their best to fit in. They are made fun of and they leave disappointed without a bid. They head over the Delta Tau Chi House where Kent’s brother used to be a member making Kent a legacy. There they meet John "Bluto" Blutarsky, who seems to be a little crazy. Delta Tau Chi offers the boys a bid because they need the due money. We next are introduced to the main protagonist Dean Vernon Wormer. The dean dislikes the Delta’s and there party attitude. The Delta house is already on probation so the dean puts them on double secret probation. He enlists the president of t...
In 1867, Oliver Kelley saw the plight of the American farmer and created the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, the National Grange. Loosely modeled after the Masons, the Grange originally set out to be more of a social and educational outlet to help combat the isolation felt by many farming families and included women among its members.
Mary had soon decided that she wanted to become a trained doctor after watching her father doctor the injured farmers. She had developed a desire for an unusual career for a mid-19th century American wo...
That summer he sweated from the humidity which in 1940 everyone in Brooklyn sweated from; then he sweated from the hot ovens at Carlo Amato’s pastry shop in Bensonhurst four or five nights a week; then he sweated from the hot ovens at a pastry shop Downtown every day of the week except on Sunday, when he usually slept until noon. From Downtown, Giovanni Vitale came home at the end of the workday on the BMT subway to his wife, Lisa, to their three kids Anna, Steve, and Johnny. After dinner they would all listen to the Philco. Then Giovanni and the eldest kid, Johnny, eleven, walked three long blocks and two short blocks, past the old people who fanned themselves on the stoops, to Carlo’s shop on Seventeenth Avenue (4).
The International Shrine is a brotherhood that is dedicated to having fun with a specific purpose. They are a fraternity based on fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love. The fraternity, which has nearly 200 temples in seven countries and thousands of clubs around the world helps to operate the unique pediatric healthcare system they founded years ago (About Our Fraternity). Through the philanthropic work of International Shriners, transportation and free medical care are provided for those children that meet the qualifications, which in turn remove a huge financial burden from the family.
John Hopkins Hospital was founded by John Hopkins a philanthropist and a Quaker by faith in 1867 and endowed in 1873. He dedicated his life and finances approximately $7,000,000 in cash to building a teaching hospital and a university named after him with designations of uniting functions of patient care with education and research. The John Hopkins hospital was officially opened on May 7, 1889. Before Mr. Hopkins died in 1973, he had committed himself to the principle of “united we stand and divided we fall” and selected board of trustees for the hospital and the university whom he entrusted with tasks and responsibilities to carry out his vision. On March 10, 1873, he put in black and white that the hospital must provide for “the indigent sick of the city of Baltimore without regard to sex, age, or color who may need surgical or medical treatment”. In his letter he also specified that the school of nursing and medicine must be established in conjunction with the hospital. Looking at it today, the John Hopkins hospital has evolved into one of the largest teaching hospital in the country. It includes more than 12 smaller hospitals and medical centers affiliated to the main hospital in Baltimore 226 clinical services 977 licensed beds and 37 building in the State of Maryland. The John Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine are the founding institutions of modern American Medicine and the birthplace of so many traditions of medicine including ward rounds, residency programs, and house staff. Many medical specialties including neuroscience by Harvey, cardiac surgery by Blalock, urology, endocrinology pediatrics, and child psychiatry by Kanner were founded at this hospital....

Another important person would be Major General George Sykes. He was born on October 9th, 1822 in Dover, Delaware. He graduated from West Point with the Class of 1842 and from there he went to Florida to join in on the second Seminole war. Governor William Burton served in many states during the Civil War, like New Mexico and Texas. He was considered one of the best officers in the Army. In the regular army he was known as “Tardy George.” General George Sykes died while he was in the army on active duty in Texas as the 20th
While the concept of the profession began in the 17th century, our paper will focus more on the contemporary American history starting in the 1940s. Dr. Amos Johnson, a founder of the American Board of Family Practice, hired a hospital orderly named Henry Treadwell to assist in the daily activities of his office. Dr. Johnson’s practice in Garland, North Carolina, initiated the spread of the physician assistant model across the state. Dr. Eugene Stead and his general medicine residents at Duke University took interest in this idea. In 1942, due to the lack of adequate medical care during World War II, Dr. Stead created a three year medical doctorate fast-track program. This sparked the idea that perhaps one day he could implement a similar program to alleviate the physician shortage in the United States.

The Knights Templar were the manifestation of a "new chivalry" which united the seemingly incompatible roles of monk and warrior. As the first religious military order, these dedicated men were models for successive orders including the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, later known as the Hospitallers, and the Teutonic Knights of the Hospital of St. Mary, two contemporary, rival brotherhoods. These and other orders, flourishing during the 12th-14th centuries as protectors of the Holy Land, were the first standing troops to be properly trained and commanded in Western Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire (Seward 17). The extraordinary story of the Knights Templar ranges from its humble establishment to a period of extreme prosperity, and, finally, to a tragic, haunting conclusion.
When the British Army left Boston, this Lodge, # 441, granted Prince Hall and his brethren authority to meet as a lodge, to go in procession on Saints John Day, and as a Lodge to bury their dead; but they could not confer degrees nor perform any other Masonic "work".
Before healthcare facilities existed, birthings and surgeries occurred in the comfort of the patients own home. The first hospital established in the world was Westminster Hospital in 1719 in London, England (Lost Hospital of London, 2013). The original facility focused on worshiping God, but then turned their focus on proper sanitation and care for the sick. An expansion of hospitals occurred after individuals realized the effectiveness of the Westminster. In 1751 “Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond founded the first public hospital” in the United States (Penn Medicine, 2017). This imitation provides insight into how cultural ideas spread and changes. My community houses quite a few health care facility, one of the most popular being the Pequot Health Center. Some of the services provided include emergency care, laboratory work, diagnostic services, and rehabilitation. Healthcare facilities don’t generally vary over space because they have to maintain certain standards for accreditation by the Joint Commission. However, the healthcare facility may look different from community to community because of culture and the range of services
