In recent years more and more so-called reading devices for reading electronic books gained popularity among people. Not a long time ago they have not been heard , and now , especially after the release of Apple iPad was released on April 3, 2010 ( one of the key features that - just reading a book ) , the popularity of readers has grown to an unprecedented scale that was not before . People read , read , and will read books. Life goes on. Books have also undergone through the modifications : first, they were on the bark and papyrus , then - on the leather , and paper, but now we are holding the e-books. Firstly, there are three types of digital books: 1. Budget E-reader with a color TFT-screen . The benefit of it- is the price , the disadvantage - high power consumption and the dubious safety of the eyes. From a long read with a bright TFT- screen may be very tired for eyes if periodically a reader will not take breaks . The thing is flickering illumination , which is a fundamental part of the technology of TFT. To distinguish the TFT screen you need to look at a certain angle, which has a viewing angle of 90 degrees . This creates some discomforts , especially in bright sunlight. 2 . Readers based on electronic ink (technology E-Ink). It is considered safe to view, consumes a little power due to the technology used. Perform the same function as the first category , but have a monochrome image . E-books with E-Ink- display allow you to read as much as you want , because if you read them in the light there won’t be any irritation to the eyes. It can be concluded that the E-Ink screen is safer for the eyes. Angle of viewing any E-Ink screen is 180 degrees, which allows easily read text at any angle , even in bright sunlight. And, the last one but not least important factor is environmental. Without e-books 125 million trees each year would be cut and emit over 40 million metric tons of CO2 annually; equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 7.3 million cars . However electronic books do not harm the nature because no tree is needed for the production of the digital book, in addition, earlier if some allergic people couldn’t read a book because of the dust, now it is not a problem and they can easily read a digital book! Personally, I love to read and that is why I bought a mobile phone that has a large screen, through which is very comfortable to read books electronically. Remember, the main rule- read the digital books with breaks, and only then it won’t harm your eye-sight!
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Nevertheless, he also like digital textbooks because it has a feature that allows to highlight and mark the
The increasing trend in smartphone, tablet, and computer sales represents a strong market enabler for the commercialization of digital textbooks. Although originally perceived as tools for communication, leisure, or work, these devices are quickly becoming major resources for tapping into information while on the go. This rapidly evolving interest will serve as a critical stepping-stone for publishers to cross the river into the portable electronic device market. As an example of the already growing interest in digital textbooks, a simple search for ...
Writer, Anna Quindlen, in her argumentative essay, “Reading Has a Strong Future.” Informs how the introduction of E-Readers is changing the perspective many have towards physical books. Quindlen’s purpose is to convey the idea written books are a thing of the past, is inaccurate and that while they will continue to thrive, E-readers are reaching people in far more communicative ways. Quindlen effectively creates not only an emotional response within her audience by building an argument, drawing statistics to increase her credibility, and involving the audience which consists of American readers.
In Jabr article, he talks about the use of technologies such as Ipads, Ebooks, tablets and kindle may drain more of our mental resources while reading, It makes it harder to remember what we have read. One of my sources, In a study by Anne Mangen, some students were asked to read a comprehension on paper and the other half were asked to read the same comprehension on the computer. In addition, students who read the comprehension on paper performed better in memorization than students who read the comprehension on the computer. This display that you're more likely to scan or skim through information when using technology to read, rather than fully immerse yourself in important details and also reading to understand. When using technology to read, you rely on remembering than knowing. When using technology while reading, you spend a lot of
According to this article, technology in the form of digital text is used to teach reading. Digital text is an interactive set of learning content and tools which serves as motivation for most students to read. It allows the students to be more interactive with the learning and keeps them engaged and motivated. An advantage of digit text is that it provides built-in tutors or virtual assistants that focus attention and provide on-the-spot teaching of reading skills (i.e. such as decoding and word meanings). From a teacher point of view, digit text allows teachers to make learning more personal for the students, allow teachers to be able to see student’s performances quicker and provide the student with feedback. Digital text can also increase instructional time and support differentiation to meet each student’s
Money is an important part of everyday life. If there is any way that money could be saved then that is more than likely the choice. The price for a tablet has been “continually falling,”(The Art Institute of Pittsburgh). If the price for a tablet becomes cheaper, then there is even more possibility of schools tapping into this industry to educate their students. Print textbooks can be somewhat expensive. The money used on print textbooks can be spent on e-books which cost less than the print version (The Art Institute of Pittsburgh). According to CBSNEWS, “Discovery’s lessons – branded ‘Techbooks’ that run on laptops, desktops, iPads or other tablets...
Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
However, I still want to stand on my opinion, I think e-book is better than printed book even more students prefer using printed books. I know using a e-book for long time may be harmful for people’s eyes, and the device may not support enough power for them to read books, but I more care about the advantages of e-book. An e-book is obviously cheaper than printed book, and it brings a lot of convenience into my study life. The most important thing is using an e-book is saving the earth resources. I believe that e-books will be more and more popular, and then replace using printed books in the
The art of reading doesn’t come with instructions, if it has to be with paper or digital; it is just an art to acquire knowledge. Although, some people say they prefer paper books, because they can smell the scent of every sheet of paper, they consider that it is better to concentrate, their eyes don’t get dry and they do not need to be worried about charging the phone or tablet, since the paper books are never going to die on battery. On the other hand, some others like the electronic book way, and they indicate is easier to carry on, to manipulate, the price is lower than paper books, and the fact that they can have many books in one file. At the end, both are used with the same purpose to learn or entertain, but there is some advantages and disadvantages between them.
The reading book made from paper and is printed ink on paper, it may make the reader feel concentrate to the book and it may make relaxed than the reading in e-book or on the internet. The reader could reach the story easier. The print media could preserve eyes because it is produced by paper that save one’s eyes for the specific reader. On the other, it has rather disadvantages to carrying the print media all the time. In particular, a lot of students have many textbooks and they must carry many textbooks in order to go to school. The books for the studying are somewhat heavy and thick. The thick and heavy textbook could be the effect to the many students’ health. The students have a pain in their shoulders and neck. If the students carry many books too much, they might be chronic back and neck pain. A normal, people’s spine is straight up and down but the students who carried heavy books may be curvature of the spine and spine compression that it is somewhat dangerous. Sometimes, it is not inconvenience to carry the print media anywhere anytime because it is weight but if there is a mobile device, people may have more convenience and they might not have a problem with their
Getting educated is one of the most important things in life when it comes to getting a good future. By developing good knowledge of schooling, it helps establish and maintain new information as needed throughout the real world. As books are one the essential tools in learning, eBooks are being used in a everyday lifestyle. Traveling to get away places from city life, helps give reading a comforting feel. ...igitization.” This does not necessarily imply that printed books will altogether disappear, but that their appearance, usage and milieu will be repurposed. Therefore, it is only rational for stakeholders such as academicians, authors and publishers to envision the future of printed books in the digital age, so as to better anticipate the changes that are, without a doubt, destined to occur.
In today’s world, people are no longer confined to reading print books. Many people are embracing the digital world they live in by accessing reading materials through electronic devices. Over the last couple of years, e-reading capabilities have shifted to become available through devices like smart phones, tablets, computers, and e-book readers. While many individuals have noted the physical differences between reading print versus reading electronically, few have studied if the use of e-readers alters the manner in which material is read. Without the consideration of these effects, many schools have begun using electronic reading devices in the classroom as a substitute for print books. Therefore, it is important that the effects of e-reader usage on their ability to understand or comprehend literature be studied, in order to afford today’s children, the internet generation, the best opportunities for success in literacy.
To conclude, there are many distinguished advantages that e-books have over traditional paper books, as e-books are lightweight, portable and hence convenient to carry, have greater update capacity, have greater storage capacity, easily accessible through online downloading as well as being environmental friendly (with saving trees). With ongoing technological development of ebooks, there have since been many added functionality for ebooks (rotational screen, hyperlink, split screen) with even many more functionality to be developed in the near future.
