Taking a Look at Brit Milah

898 Words2 Pages

Brit milah is a Jewish religious ceremony where a newborn male is circumcised and it is performed eight days after a male baby is born. It is customary for a brit milah to be held in a synagogue or in the house of the new born child(“Circumcision in Judaism”). This is the first mitzvah that is performed on a Jewish baby boy. This mitzvah connects the child to G-d and demonstrates that we all believe in one G-d(Ibid). In addition, this is proven to be a mitzvah because one is fulfilling G-d’s commandments that a Jewish male’s body must be physically different from gentiles(Ibid). Although brit milah is a mitzvah in the Jewish religion, there are many controversies regarding the act, with many arguments for and against the banning of brit milah. Brit milah is a customary religious act that should be adhered to even though there are some health concerns and some believe that it is a violation of physical integrity. Ultimately, brit milah should not be banned as banning such an act would violate religious freedom which clearly is more important than any concerns about the actual procedure.

There are many arguments for and against the banning of brit milah that have a major factor in the decision of such a ban. Many arguments for the ban do have rational reasoning however, the views for opposing side are much stronger. Firstly, according to the human rights code, all human beings should be able to make their own decisions about their body, therefore avoiding the violation of physical integrity(Putzke). All humans should be able to consent to their genitals being tampered with especially since this procedure is not medically necessary to the child’s health(Ibid). Any health risks, such as HIV will not come into play until the man ...

...ndreds of centuries has not harmed a babies health. This procedure is actually in the child's best interest as it is in accordance with fundamental beliefs of his faith.

It is clearly demonstrated that having a brit milah is essential to a Jewish baby boy and banning the medical procedure can cause detrimental harm to Jews who have strong religious convictions. This religious custom is extremely important and plays a pivotal role in the Jewish religion. In addition, the health risks that can occur in a brit milah are very rare making the procedure almost risk free. Although, some may argue that such a procedure infringes on the physical integrity of a person, parental consent is allowed. The banning of brit milah will infringe on religious freedoms which is a human basic right and clearly more harmful than any of the views that support the ban of brit milah.
