Plaque psoriasis is typically found in young adult patients and it is considered one of the most common types of psoriasis and is most commonly found in the elderly (Feldman, 2014; Dawn & Edwards, 2007). Psoriasis affects 2-8 million individuals in the United States (Kennedy-Malone, Fletcher, & Martin-Plank, 2014, p. 140). Incidence of psoriasis in men and women is equal between the two genders. One study showed highest incidence occurring from age 60-69 years in the United States (Dawn & Edwards, 2007). Ethnic background prevalence findings were the lowest when observed in the North and South American Indians, West Africans, and Japanese and the highest association of psoriasis was found among the Scandinavian population (Kennedy-Malone et al., 2014, p. 141). Incidence of psoriasis in Caucasians showed 2.5% affected in comparison to African Americans at 1.3% (Kennedy-Malone et al., 2014, p. 141). Prior research indicated that geographic location may play a role in individuals having psoriasis due to the increased prevalence of the skin disorder found individuals residing closer to the equator (Feldman, 2014). VEGF is found in high levels in the suprabasal keratinocytes, which is thought to causes chronic skin inflammation (Heidenreich, R., Rocken, M., Kamaran, G., 2009). Environmental factors involved with psoriasis are triggered by alcohol, cigarette, stress, infections, trauma, and certain medications such as: beta blockers, lithium, NSAIDS, ACE- inhibitors, and terbinafine (Blauvelt & Ehst, 2013).
