A dysregulation of brain function that controls emotions is called depression ("Depression"). Depression affects teeangers in many ways. This disorder is characterized by negative emotions that are very intense and last a long time. This can cause social, educational, personal, and family issues (Krans). At any given time, 15% of children and adolescents show symptoms of depression (Krans).
One of the first recognizable symptoms of depression is withdrawl, and other differences in their attitude, such as showing signs of sadness or irritability, and teens appetite, energy, sleep patterns, and academic performance might change (Steingard). When it is suspected that someone might have depression, they must meet the criteria described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to be diagnosed (Krans). One form of depression that might be diagnosed is adjustment disorder with depressed mood. This is the most common depressive mood disorder (Bhatia and Bhatia). A milder, chronic form of depression is dysthymic disorder. This causes a depressed or irritable mood (Bhatia and Bhatia). Another form of depression is atypical depression, which includes symptoms such as hypersomnia, increased appetite, weight gain, heavy feeling in arms and legs. Atypical depression is common in children and adolescents (Bhatia and Bhatia). If there is a depressed mood, decreased appetite, increased sleep, as well as social isolation during the months between October and February, there might be a case of seasonal affective disorder (Bhatia and Bhatia). If any of these symptoms are present in a teenager, there is a possibility they have depression.

...rans). Another form of therapy is psychodynamic therapy. This involves looking into someone’s psyche to help end internal struggles like stress or conflict (Krans). This form of therapy helps with specific life experiences by finding optimistic things when life might not be very positive, like a death of a loved one (Krans). With proper treatment, adolescents can once again be happy and optimistic (Krans).
Depression is a serious issue for many teenagers. It can affect their school life and home life. That is why raising awareness for depression is extremely important. It is also very important for any teenager with depression to get the proper treatment because without proper treatment, they could be struggling for a large part of their life. With many people becoming more aware of depression, this disorder will eventually not affect the lives of so many teenagers.
