Why is it that Pearl is the direct object that came from the scarlet letter? In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the character Pearl is born as a result of her mother Hester committing adultery and sleeping with Reverend Dimmesdale while her husband is away. In “A Pre- Symbolic Struggle: Pearl’s Subject- construction in The Scarlet Letter” by Chenghe Yao, the topic of the way the scarlet letter symbolizes her morals and the way she was brought up. In Yao’s article, it shows how Pearl's entire life is based on the effects of the scarlet letter, the way she is taught, and the way society views her is vital in a way that we can better understand the character of Pearl. Yao states “Hester announces that she can teach the girl what she has been taught by the scarlet letter” Hester believes that what she has been taught by the letter should be passed onto pearl instead of her being molded to fit in with everyone else. In the novel, there is a scene where Pearl is told to talk about her father (God), knowing the answer she says that she was “plucked from a rose bush” (chapter 8). So instead of this little girl saying what she's been taught she strays from the ways of everyone else and decides to be her own person, even though she knows it could cause trouble. The article says “ It enables infinite space for imagination and explanation” (Yao) referring to the scarlet letter, and Pearl does just that. In the novel, Pearl insists for an answer on what the letter means, put Hester refuses to tell. Pearl is fascinated by the idea of “The Black Man” otherwise known as the devil, and Hester tells her that she has met him. Pearl is constantly wanting to see him……... Yao says that “It seems that Pearl is more proficient in communicating with the wild, even barbaric creatures then civilized people” thus showing that since society has shunned pearl is not normal and does not know how to communicate with others. Society creates it nearly impossible for pearl two have relationships with children her age because of the portrayal of her being this demonic, child of sin. So when Pearl sees children she does not know how to react and therefore has no friends. The article states, “She is curious about the world, in which wild behaviors are regarded as being driven by devils” this giving a representation of how society viewed her. Pearls erratic behaviors were a result of the way she was treated and never interacting with anyone other than her mother. Yao states, “Pearl's harmonious relation with nature, indicates that she is a part of nature.” showing that Pearl is not apart of society, but better identifies with nature so Pearl is not a normal girl. Pearls strange demeanor is what causes her to not fit in with others and is one of the key reasons she fits so well with nature, acting as an escape from reality.
The article gives compelling evidence to support how pearls behavior is displayed, the meaning behind her connecting two the scarlet letter, and her inability to connect with society. Pearl is depicted as this demon child that is the result of sin. The article
