In the novel Graceling there are many important characters including the main character Katsa, her uncle King Randa, and her friend Po. Kristin Cashore uses symbolism in many cases to provide more information about these characters without telling the reader directly, so the individual could form their own opinion on the information given. Symbolism, when used in the right book and the right context, could prove to be an extremely useful tool for the author. Throughout the novel Graceling, author Kristin Cashore uses many symbols to give insight on the growth and portrayal of the characters. The first sign of symbolism is directed towards King Randa. This symbolic piece of dialogue gives readers insight of the character Prince Greening Grandemalion, otherwise known as Po. Po is graced, but the color of his eyes are gold and silver which aren’t typical colors.`In the Lienid kingdom, the graced are treated as normal human beings that have friends- something that Katsa didn’t understand. She asked one day about how he got his nickname Po. His reply was, “My brothers gave me that name when I was little. It’s a kind of tree in Lienid, the po tree. In autumn its leaves turn silver and gold. Inevitable name, I guess.” (Cashore 99). All forms of literature consist of patterns that can be discovered through critical and analytical reading, observing and comparing. Many patterns are discussed in the novel, How to Read Literature like a Professor, by Thomas C. Foster. Among these patterns, he discusses the use of symbolism and the representation something can have for a different, underlying aspect of a piece of literature. Mare Barrow, the red blooded protagonist goes through several trials and tribulations dealing with the segregation and morals. A recurring pattern that blew me away was the repetitive idea of anyone can betray anyone. At first I did not recognize this as a pattern, but as the book progressed, it became more and more evident. The symbolism of Mare’s earrings, one rhinestone for each of her brothers that have gone war, was a beautiful symbol for the love of her family. Comprehending several of the symbols as well as the patterns with memory brought the novel onto a whole new level for me and only increased my appreciation and adoration for the characters. The Novel and Film of The Grifters had many uses of symbolism, supporting the theme of sexual corruption, and the fall of the three main characters’ craft of the grift. In the novel, symbolism was tougher to pick out. However, the descriptions of the characters created symbolic visualizations of their personalities and human nature. The film had more obvious uses of symbolism through the choice of women’s clothes, the character’s actions, and their language.
In literature, symbolism is used to give meaning to certain things throughout a story that are different than their literal sense. Symbolism also gives the writer freedom to add a deeper meaning to their work. The storm that took place in Kate Chopin’s story, The Storm, is used to symbolize getting Alcee and Calixta back together, the passion between the two of them, and to keep Bobinot and Bibi from returning to the gallery to find Alcee and Calixta.
3. An example of Symbolism can be found in Richie’s letters to home being that they help represent his attitude towards the war and how it changes. At the beginning of the book the letters are optimistic and seemingly care-free but, as the novel progresses his letter’s become an honest representation of his thoughts and feelings which are anything but optimistic.

Those symbols take on that role of developing a meaning to intrigue the reader. In terms of definition, a symbol can be seen in more than one way such as person, place, and object. Authors such as Amy Tan who wrote “Two Kinds”, Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote “Young Goodman Brown, and Kate Chopin who wrote “The Storm” provide an essence of purity and vivacity throughout their story. Author Amy Tan who wrote “Two Kinds” shows the symbols of purity and vivacity representing what the protagonist Jing-Mei and what her mother wanted her to be which was a prodigy
With the use of symbolism, or the practice of representing things by means of symbols that give significance to objects (The Free Dictionary 2011), events, or relationships, one can see that this device helps the overall plot and development of characters by showing the significance of emotions, such as guilt, by the players. Symbolism brings a lot to the overall work as it gives the readers a deeper look into the emotions brought up in the play, helps the reader associate symbols to actual meanings, and gives the story a kind of depth that would not be there without.
In all novels, symbolism is a key element that authors use to heighten the literary merit of their writing. In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis uses symbolism as a driving force throughout the series. Without the use of characters similar to Christian figures, Lewis’ series would lack deep literary meaning. The wide variety of symbols and literary devices used in these books successfully evoke deep thought and inspires readers to analyze the work further.
Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.

Tony Morrison in Song of Solomon uses symbols such as peacock, geography book, cave, eggs, ginger smell, darkness, and flying to add more depth and sense to the story. Dinaw Mengestu’s novel The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is a story about an immigrant from Ethiopia named Sepha Stephanos that discovers the freedoms he travels to the United States for are not easily accessible and that sometimes you can lose yourself trying to figure out who you are. The passage that most clearly represents this notion comes as Stephanos is reflecting at the end of the novel, he says: “What was it my father used to say? In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Symbolism is your prospective of looking at an object or event. In the play “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Johan Ibsen there are objects and events that symbolizes people’s lives. We don’t see symbols in life; we only see them in novels and plays. In the play there are a lot of objects and events that symbolizes more than what they are. Like the Christmas tree is used for decorative purposes in real life, but in this play it can be compared to Nora Helmers feeling. Other symbols include of “The New Year”, “the title of the play” and “Nicknames” Torvald calls Nora. Although we don’t think about simple things, they might have a deeper meaning to it.
