SWOT Analysis
The objective of a SWOT analysis is to help leaders develop an awareness of the factors involved in the decision. It helps leaders to identify both internal and external influences that will affect the sustainability of the satellite clinic. Perhaps most importantly, a SWOT analysis allows leaders to determine if the project’s strengths and opportunities outweigh its inherited weaknesses and threats (Taylor, 2016). Appendix B provides a summary of the SWOT analysis.
Strengths
PMH has an extraordinary amount of local support. For example, community members have assisted with fundraising to make equipment improvements. Additionally, residents donated funds to help build the new PHM hospital that opened in 1995 (Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, n.d.a). Consequently, leaders have considered closing PMH many times. The most recent closing consideration was during 2010 (Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, 2014). In addition, income from patient services is oftentimes negative (HCA, 2012). However, PMH’s financial positioning should improve since West Virginia recently expanded Medicaid.
Furthermore, the healthcare industry is experiencing staffing shortages. Unfortunately, the shortage of healthcare professionals is more profound in rural areas (National Conference of State Legislators [NCSL], 2016). The ratio per capita between rural and urban providers is 0.42 for physicians, 0.66 for NPs, and 0.91 for registered nurses (National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, 2012). Compounding the problem, the rural population ages 55 to 75 are estimated to grow 30% by 2020 (NCSL, 2016).
