The skies are blue and clear. The clouds hang low and mountains – ancient monoliths – reach up with their fingers to touch them. The trees are ancient; the forests wise; and the prairies and grasslands are fruitful with greenery and wildflowers. Clear streams bring freshly melted water from the glaciers down to the inhabitants of valleys. The people here are contented with themselves and their surroundings. There is much singing and laughter to be heard. This is Switzerland, a small but noble country located in Europe.
Switzerland is a unique and beautiful country and everyone should see it with their own two eyes sometime during their existence. This country has amazing geography, culture, and all manner of things to see and do while you are there.
Part of the allure of the country is that it has a deeply rooted history, with marks from people all over Europe. There is evidence that suggests that mankind has been living in Switzerland since 50,000 years ago. However, it wasn’t until 1500 B.C.E. that pre-bronze age people settled in the plateau (Jud). During the Iron Age Celts used their superior technology to subjugate the lesser tribes in their conquest to add all of Europe to their empire. This meant that the Bronze Age cultures of Switzerland were displaced (Jud).
A tribe Celts in Switzerland were under siege from one of the other tribes to the east, as a result they moved west into what is now France. At this time, France was part of the Roman Empire, and Julius Caesar did not approve of the tribe squatting on his lands. The Celtic Iceni tribe kept out of the violent conflict, and because of this they were awarded ‘client kingdom’ status by the Romans. Being a client kingdom meant that the Iceni tribe maintained a considerable amount of independence. They were allowed to keep their rulers, and they were allowed to mint coin. They were bound by treaty to Rome, who in return would back them up, often against rival tribes. Yet the Romans took the view that they had the authority, to at any time intervene in the internal affairs of their client kingdoms. Glaciers, an integral feature of any mountainous landscape, were the focus of interest, curiosity and admiration for many travelers in the Romantic period, especially those in the Swiss region of Chamounix. During the 18th and 19th century, four of the voyagers who wrote excerpts on the glaciers were Coxe, Bourrit, Ramond and Shelley; these travelers made similar comparisons to each other regarding the nature of glaciers and the emotions evoked upon their viewing.

Alsace is in the north eastern part of France and borders Switzerland to the south and Germany in the east. It is the smallest region in the country, covering only 1.5 percent of the total surface area of France. The area has quite the spreadsheet for historical events and wars. This particular part of the country belonged to Germany several times before eventually being ruled a French province once again. Alsace has harsh winters and warm summers, making it more of a summer time destination above anything else. However, the area is studded with mountains and ski lodges for those who enjoy wintertime sports, so there is something to please everybody. The food in Alsace is as diverse as the province itself because of its huge Germanic influence throughout the years. Furthermore the cuisine is far from ordinary, housing some of the world’s best Chefs. However the style itself is quite rustic and unpolished but none the less sophisticated in its own way.
Between 58 and 50 BC, I conquered the rest of Gaul, up to the river Rhine. As I expanded my reach, I also showed my ruthlessness with my enemies. In one instance, I waited until my opponents ' water supply had gone dry, and then ordered the hands of all the remaining survivors be cut off(“Julius”). “veni, vidi, vici” (“Gaius”, Illustrated). I said this famous quote meaning “I came, I saw, I conquered” in Latin. This was a powerful quote because it shows my focus and determination to succeed in what I set to do and conquer all things I put my mind to. In Spain, I defeated the warring rival tribes, brought stability to the region, and won the personal allegiance of my troops through my skill on the battlefield. I was awarded a consulship by the senate(Mark). I later left Rome with my legions and went to Gaul in 58 BC. I defeated the tribes there just as I had done in Spain and secured the borders of the provinces. When the Germanic tribes seemed threatening to invade, I built a bridge over the Rhine River, marching my legions across in a show of force, and then marched them back and had the bridge dismantled. The Germans understood the message and never invaded(Mark). Jumping forward to 44 BC, in Rome, dissatisfaction was growing among the senatorial aristocrats over the increasingly permanent nature of my rule. A conspiracy
