We live in a society where being an ugly woman is the greatest sin. In today’s world, it is every woman’s job, or duty, to be beautiful. It does not matter if a woman is intelligent, delightful, or strong because no matter what, she will be judged on her looks. In Susan Sontag’s article, “A Woman’s Beauty: Put-Down or Power Source?” she uses the rhetorical devices ethos, pathos, and logos to argue the claim that women are seen as nothing but decorative objects who’s personalities are irrelevant. Sontag explains her claim that women are judged only on their looks by stating, “For it is everybody, a whole society, that has identified being feminine with caring about how one looks. This statement appeals to the emotions of her readers using a rhetorical device called pathos. She helps her female readers feel the judgement of society around them, trapping them with the word beautiful. She then builds them up, empowering them by saying, “to get out of the trap requires that women get some critical distance from that excellence and privilege which is beauty, enough distance to see how much beauty itself has been abridged in order to prop up the mythology of [being] feminine” (Sontag, 389). The word “trap” in this quote is extremely powerful and causes the reader to feel a very deep and hurtful emotion towards the way society has been hurting women for so long. “Women are [seen as] the “beautiful” sex . . . women are dependent and inferior” (Sontag 387). She uses this vivid language to connect with her reader’s emotions, this is called pathos. Sontag uses many different adjectives to describe how society interprets the word “beautiful.” When thinking of the word beautiful, most often the words “delicate,” “graceful,” or “nice” come to mind as well. Very rarely is the word beautiful associated with “strong,” “independent,” or “powerful.” This is because the word beautiful has been reserved for women only, and women are not typically seen as anything other than fragile. Through the use of pathos, Sontag makes every female reader feel just how weak the world perceives her to be. She uses strong words, such as “inferior,” to make her readers feel, and further understand just how upsetting this issue can be. Men are instead called “handsome,” “Handsome is the masculine equivalent of —and refusal of— a compliment which has accumulated certain demeaning overtones, by being reserved for women only” (Sontag, 387). Handsome is a synonym for the word beautiful and yet, society sees them as having entirely different meanings. Nguyen explains that beauty promises to be redemptive and bring an individual from the outside in relation with the world(362). For example, the United States through nongoverenmental orgainizations (NGO’s), have promoted beauty to Afghanistan women because it is a way if liberating them from an uncivilized barbaric society that oppresses them to hide their beauty through the veil. According to Kant, the veil is considered ugly because it hides the body, which is associated with the erotic. Kant claims that beauty made visible is true and good, while the invisible is ugly and erotic (266). Nguyen claims using Kant that beauty is connected to morality because it makes visible what the “ugly” is trying to hide by providing a pathway in which beauty can improve ones life. Nguyen asserts that individuals use beauty as a serious of techniques to produce knowledge and emotions that function to portray the individual with dignity in comparison to the “ugly”. Thus, the use of beauty as an educational tool that measures their character is an important factor in teaching women to associate themselves with the rest of the world.

Sports has become a major part of society, and a new “sport” has been “created” for men, “pick up women.” Women are looked at as items by a myriad of men, where the craving to “get them” has not declined at all. One could think why men are constantly chasing women as a “sport.” The reason for this is that women allow for this to occur. Ms. Sontag’s worry that women welcome this upon themselves would still be correct. Ms. Sontag said, that women in her lifetime “should allow their faces to show the lives they have lived,” but her words might not have been completely understood by the women back then. In the article “Beating Anorexia and Ganing Feminism,” Marni Grossman shares her experiance of how she overcame her struggle with anorexia through understanding the feminist movement. Marni objectafies the ways in which society’s expectations and ideas of what it means to have “beauty” is having and negitaive impact. The idea that women are subjected to an unfair amount of pressure as a result of the fashion world and other media outlets is hardly new, but Naomi Wolf takes this claim to a new and absurd level. Her essay is as unorganized as it is impractical. Her ideas are presented in a smorgasbord of flawed logic. Particularly disturbing is what she calls the “beauty myth.” What I disagree with is the word myth. According to Wolf, women in magazines and advertisements have approximately 20% less body mass than that of the average woman, creating an unattainable standard. This fact in no way supports her claim of a “beauty myth.” The existence of a myth suggests something to be untrue in nature. Magazine companies and advertisement agencies are not in the business of showing an average woman. They are in the business of selling a product. Of course they are going to use beautiful people. These companies completely regard the fact that most women do not in fact look like this, but they know that their product would be less appealing if they displayed average or unattractive women. Therefore, they do not deserve scrutiny over the fact that they do not present a typical woman. They in fact do the same for men. Wolf says, “The beauty myth is not about women at all. It is about men’s institutions and institutional power” (page 485, first new paragraph). How does one begin to say how warped this impression is?
The concept of beauty is a subject society speaks on through many channels. Social media plays a tremendous role in how society measures beauty and how to achieve these impossible standards. People from all walks of life have become obsessed with the idea of beauty and achieving the highest level it. In many cases, those who do not meet societal views of what is “beautiful” can become very resentful to these predisposed notions of beauty. Wolf utilizes the term "the beauty myth" to demonstrate that the interpretation of beauty is a creation of society, intended to keep women trapped inside their bodies. Wolf claims that the beauty myth "is not about women at all." She explains, "it is about men's institutions and institutional power" (5). In addition, she claims that women have recently obtained numerous rights, which now threaten "to destabilize the institutions on which a male-dominated culture has depended." She continues to explain that "a collective panic reaction […] has forced a demand for counter images" (8). Clearly, society as a whole does create pressure on women to act in a certain manner. The concept of “beauty” is something that everyone feels, thinks, or wants, in order to fit society’s standards. In today’s society, we are often faced with the unrealistic ideals of what beauty is. Due to society’s constant portraying of unrealistic beauty ideals, this reinforces a negative influence upon women’s idea of beauty, resulting in a negative impact in their confidence, and self-esteem, which leads to others, specifically women to be manipulated by society’s corrupted outlook of what beauty is. To add onto this issue, we are constantly surrounded by sources of this negative influence in our everyday lives, including magazines, television, advertisements, and so on. However, women specifically, are more prone to be victims of this negative effect, thus will have more pressure upon themselves to match society’s idea of “beauty,” which includes unrealistic and sometimes unattainable beauty standards. Society today emphasizes the beauty of one's outer facade. The external appearance of a person is the first thing that is noticed. People should look for a person's inner beauty and love the person for the beauty inside. Beauty, a powerful aspect of life, can draw attention but at the same time it can hide things that one does not want disclosed. Beauty can be used in a variety of ways to affect one's status in culture, politics, and society. Beauty most certainly should not be used to excuse punishment for bad deeds.
