The United States of America, a country which has been considered the “best” country for decades may now be falling in rank amongst other countries. Many articles have been written, books published, videos recorded, and even television series made; all of which agree with this statement. A philosophy professor from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania published an article back in 2006 titled “Why the U.S. is Not the Best Country in the World” which compared the United States to other countries around the world. He concluded that the United States lacks in many areas which other countries do not and in fact are excelling. Similarly, a clip for an episode from the television series The Newsroom, addresses that the United States is not the leading …show more content…
This article written by Professor Steven D. Hales is titled “Why the U.S. is Not the Best Country in the World”. He starts the article by bringing attention to the fact that the United States has five percent of the entire world’s population yet has twenty five percent of the world’s prisoners. The article opens with this to bring immediate attention to an aspect that is not perfect in the country. He then threads his article with statistics about countries around the globe. Professor Hales does not try to frame the U.S. as being the best or worst country; he simply eliminates countries as possible candidates for being the best country by their statistical ratings of their health, happiness and standard of living. He points out that the United States is in the top leaders in a few categories such as least number of suicide rates, a higher literacy rate and the United States does have more freedom than some countries. Throughout Professor Hale’s entire article, he compares countries using statistics and eventually concludes that no, the United States is not the best …show more content…
The scene is set up in a conference hall with a student body and four professors. One student rises to the microphone to ask the professors to give her a brief reason why the United States is the best country. Two of the four professors have no issue answering this question with their responses ranging from freedom to diversity and opportunity. A character by the name Will, also one of the professors, sarcastically answers “the New York Jets”. There is a chuckle from the crowd. The other professor who has yet to answer the question challenges Will to come up with a better answer; he was not satisfied. After a few poking a prodding’s, Will finally says “Not the greatest country in the world, Professor. That’s my answer.” This shocks the crowd, nobody was expecting his answer. He goes on and explains his reasoning and through the heartfelt response, the viewer sees his point of view. Will speaks to the emotions of the audience. He presents statistics such as there are 217 sovereign states and 180 of them have freedom; the United States is not the only country in the world to have freedom. Another statistic he addresses is that the United States was seventeenth in literacy and now is twenty-seventh. He conveys the message that if the United States truly is the best country, the why are we slipping in the ranks? Both of these genres focus
...ese rankings is not because other countries like Japan or Finland advance precipitously, but because America regresses. The reason why America is a underprivileged country is because, it constantly worries about the uncertainty of the future and does not give attention to it’s present. As said by Dalai Lama, a buddhist spiritual leader “What matters is to live in the present, live now for every moment in the future.”
Mukherjee begins her essay with an exposition of her and her sister’s story. She uses repetition in order to emphasize the main differences between the two. For example, she states, “I am an American citizen and she is not. I am moved that thousands of residents are finally taking the oath of citizenship. She is not.” This line is used to set up her subject. She is stating that she is an immigrant whose dream was to envelop the American culture, while her sister does not believe that she should be assimilated into it. The use of repetition also appeals to her audience, Americans, by capturing their attention. Many Americans are nationalistic, if not jingoistic, and believe that America is the greatest country in the world. The notion that others do not feel this way may intrigue them, or potentially offend them, causing them to read on in attempt to find flaws within her argument.
The United States is not the greatest country in the world. However, for a very long time, people have believed that the United States tops the list. This is because of the classic lifestyle and technological advancements portrayed in our daily media. The United States is portrayed as a country of peace and optimum harmony. Consequently, we get the impression that United States is the best place to be. The younger generation seems to enjoy life to the fullest with almost no regrets. After all, most of us can drive a car at the age of 16; compare that to other countries at 18. We have access to pretty much whatever we need. Most adults are not constantly monitoring and hovering over their children. They have jobs and financial prosperity is huge compared to other countries. The security system of our country is depicted to be superb. In other words, nothing seems amiss. In fact, many citizens in the developing world have sought to stay in the United States with the belief that their life will be the best in the world. The search for green cards is ever increasing because of immigration. Statistics indicate that the American Embassies in most developing countries are among the busiest, which is a good thing right? Nevertheless, I believe that United States is not the greatest country. A close examination of various sectors of the country reveals that America lags behind in many aspects.
In America, we live among the wealthiest of people. We are advanced in education, economics, research and medicine. We consider ourselves the most powerful and protected people in the world. Our economy is booming, information is flying, and opportunity abounds. We consider ourselves the most religious and the most generous of all people. We have the most stable government in the world, yet we find ourselves in a national crisis.
The essay titled America Remain the World’s Beacon of Success by Tim Roemer discusses the positive position America placed as a leader in many of its endeavors in the fields of technology, sciences, and healthcare. In Roemer’s opinion, America regarded upon by other countries as the litmus test comparing their success. Roemer enumerated the many achievements and discoveries America accomplished as new country at only 700 years old. Now the question remains, will the success of America continue to be sustainable? I believe it will be, and I agree with Roemer’s opinion despite the internal issues the country face on a regular basis. After all, success is a daily repeated effort in small sum.

The American values system have also been on the decline, from corporate greed to the entitlement generation. When corporate executive officers of corporate America make three hundred and eighty times more than the ordinary worker today, and the top wage earners on the social stratosphere pay fewer taxes than the average worker. They have what it seems a cultural capital and advantage to have a higher status than most of the American 's. It is hard to imagine that the upward social mobility of today is attainable. The nation 's social mobility is dependent on the overall structure of social statuses and occupations. United Nations health economist and author Dr. Howard Friedman stated in a news interview with CNN that, "The land of opportunity is not what it used to be. In a time where safety, health, and democracy are on the decline. America now has the highest pre- and post- income adjustment of all countries." The best overall income equality were found in Japan, Spain, Korea, and Italy, although America does still excel in areas of education, having some of the best colleges in the world, as well as Hospitals, technology, and entrepreneurship. Having the money to attend some of these prestigious
The United States of America used to be one of the most ideal places in the world. Many people in the past saw it as a great utopia; a place of perfection, especially in laws, government, and social conditions. This so-called utopia, however, is slowly turning the tides; making its way towards a dehumanizing, overcrowded, terrorized hell; a dystopia.
Before World War II, it became very clear that the US would play a new, and important leading role in the world. Henry Luce, author of The American Century, wrote about the new roles he anticipated the US to have. His essay calls the US to action in leading the rest of the world in our ways. About a year later on May 8th, 1942, Vice President Henry Wallace proposed similar ideas in a speech. He and Luce both saw the US as leading powers but disagreed on how the leading should be done. Wallace portrays the US in a friendlier manner. He calls the upcoming era the century of the common man while Luce calls it the American century. This topic is relevant today. How much involvement should leading countries have in developing ones and how should
Annu using test results from each country on how they score, turns out the United States isn’t even close on the ranking in the list. She uses sources from test scores, to college financial problems, examples on how the system teaches their students. It’s quite convincing because as a student who use to attend high school here in the U.S., I can stand by what she says as in she’s right. We are terribly taught and need to be looked as equally regardless who we are, or where we come from
Have you ever wondered why America is the best country in the world? Probably not because it’s obvious, but I’m going to tell you anyway. America is the best country in the world for a few reasons, like freedom of speech and freedom. I could go on but I don’t want to waste time saying stuff you most likely already know.

Every writer has that one special quirk that keeps readers coming back for more. Whether it is the humor or the characters, most authors carry their quirks from story to story. In “Shooting an Elephant,” George Orwell describes his experience of shooting an elephant. In “A Hanging,” he describes the emotions that run through him as he watches the hanging of a prisoner. Both essays have similar key ideas that identify Orwell as a writer. The results of pride and power contribute to the themes that connect his essays and identify Orwell as a descriptive writer.

One of my greatest hobbies is travelling the globe and I love to see new places. I enjoy experiencing new environment and culture. There are many countries to visit around the world and each country has something unique to offer. In every country, there are many beautiful places to see and tradition to learn. However, the country I have always wanted to visit is Italy. Italy is located in Europe and it is famous for its ancient history, architectural heritage, culture and even food. It is my dream to visit Italy with my family one day.
