I believe that the progression of new media does in fact mean that society in undergoing a form of democratization. Since new media means the ability to have on-demand communication and the ability to contact anyone, anywhere at anytime, this indeed will naturally cause democratization. The definition of democratization is to essentially, hear the public’s needs and have them speak for themselves. I have come up with three points that will illustrate how we will soon progress to becoming an entirely democratic society if we continue with new media in our everyday lives. We now have the ability to speak to anyone at anytime, we have lost our “face” but not our voice and we essentially answers to ourselves not others. These three points are what are causing our society to move into the direction of democratization.

Twitter is an online social networking service that has grown to a global scale. In 2006, it was created for people to be able to share short blurbs of information with each other, and it has done its job quite well. However, like most technologies, there comes consequences, good and bad, that many didn’t intend, or expect, to happen. Twitter has greatly affected the world, and society as a whole, as it affects everything from the news to even how we think.
Fareed Zakaria’s The Rise of Illiberal Democracy expresses the views he has on the differences between liberal democracy and illiberal democracy, and which one causes civil war. He also explains how both types of democracy go hand in hand with other in the formation of the United State government and it constitution. Zakaria also talks about how majority of the countries in the world are democratic, but majority of which are an illiberal democracies. According to the Merriam Webster’s Dictionary democracy is an organization or situation in which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights. We then ask ourselves how often the media promote us to have equal rights or if they allow us to make our own decisions. In America media is in many forms. You have mass media; print media broadcast media, broadcasting, narrowcasting, and sound bites. These are just some ways in which media is presented to you. When media is therefore displayed it has lasting effects on people in which then hurts democracy. Now instead of texting, every single social media application has some sort of texting on there to text your friends or even try to let famous/popular people respond to you. Neither strengths or weaknesses out weigh one another, but it is necessary to have both due to the varying definitions. A democracy is a government that is run by the people. The politicians that we elect to run our government are human and they are susceptible to mistakes based on their own strengths and weaknesses. The strengths and weaknesses they possess are reflected into our government but at least “we the people” elect them and they are not chosen for us.

When the word democracy is thrown about it usually has to do with the rights or original intentions for a group or organization. The first group intended to be influenced by the media was the informed voter. Political parties along with the government used a variety of media resources to persuade the voter or in effect receive a vote for their cause. Returning to the thought of ?democracy? the question is, what was the original intention of the media with relation to the theme of democracy and the informed voter? To analyze this thought thoroughly one must first grasp an understanding of the basic definition of democracy.
