SMS or a 'MESS'
As the technology is breeding over, mobile services and its application has entered day-to-day bustle. Once a luxury has become an acute inevitability. The positive influence is that it is affordable, best means of communication and contact, messaging service, encompassing range and its shape & size. All is fine until it knocks our door heavily. But, irony is that we use the technology not because of its adequacy. Instead our dimensions are diminishing and degrading with the way we are bestowing it.
As you can see the above conversation, none of the words are complete except "Hi", and some of them seem to be senseless. Its a cruel truth that SMS-Short Messaging Service is growing from Short to Shorter and Shorter to Shortest. And what are we conceding in all this is a big question.
What triggered me to write all this were two scenarios.
a)My tutor during a conversation said an examination answer sheet comprised of some short forms that are used in SMS.
b)After this, I kept watching all the mails I receive and some of the chat sessions I had with my family and friends.
If we could provoke further, the results are alarming. An examination paper with short terms instead of formal, complete answers and our normal day-to-day conversations are no more in complete forms. 'SMS' was the term introduced for the mobile services with restricted display. But, what is actually stopping us in using the complete, sensible, flawless and meaningful sentences a...
In the article, “Does Im Make U dum”, the author states how instant messaging has made us become “dum”. The issue of using popular texting abbreviations like, “lol”, “brb”, or “gtg” can either be an effective or unproductive way of expression. Using abbreviations through texting are so commonly used by children, teenagers, and adults. Statistics show that children are younger than ever for when they are first exposed to mobile phones and text messaging. A 2005 ChildWise study that one-in-four children under the age of eight had a mobile phone.
The author notes that technology would affect the way people use their language in a matter of using abbreviations when texting. He also noted that messaging causes poor spelling and laziness when typing simple words on the phone. Teenagers have been creating abbreviated words since texting became popular; but abbreviated words have been around way before mobile phones were released. Crystal states, “people have been initializing common phrases for ages” (902), and
Text messaging is a technology that contributes to the great decline of the English language. The English language is often butchered through the use of text messaging. In Orwell’s essay, he states “An effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form” (446). Main stream society is too lazy to correct any grammar and punctuation in a text message, leading to the assumption that it is not important, after all it is only a text message. Thus, this shows the English language is in decline, when society is to lazy to take a few extra second to correct spelling and punctuation errors . One would not be able to write the same way in an academic essay as they would in a text message. If one would do so, that student would receive an F. No English teacher, or for that matter any teacher, would be thrilled nor impressed reading an essay filled with these common texting erors.
Although her study supports the hypothesis that texting plus writing have no relationship to one another, Cullington recognizes the importance of new technology and society’s evolving methods of communication. She writes, “The use of text messaging as a common means of communication is becoming increasingly popular; therefore, this issue should continue to be examined.” Cullington may not have anticipated the ways in which texting itself has changed. One of the differences between now and two years ago are the abbreviations plus the use of acronyms. However, what has made the device so distinctive is that texting has actually gotten “smarter.” People with smartphones have the assistance of spellcheck, reference “apps,” autocorrect, autocompletion and, voice-control capability. Also know as Siri the response voice of the iPhone’s voice-control system. In the past, text messages were ultimately just instant, electronic versions of a brief
Communication is the key to any healthy relationship along with other factors. When text messaging is the main type of communication a relationship is bound to have many problems. Communication is supposed to be face- to- face and not electronically. Text messages are also a thing that alters trust between spouses. Many times people use text messages to be sneaky. There are many times when text messages have caused many scandals. Text messaging also lacks a needed amount of emotion. You can not always express the way you feel through a message because it can be taken that seriously. Text messaging is the downfall of many intimate relationships because it results in lack of communication, trust, honesty and emotion.
How often do we text? Text messaging is a very useful way to communicate; but, there are occasions where texting is unnecessary, for example in meetings, watching movies, interacting with family, and even in the shower. However, while texting can be overused, it can also help us get to know one another in easier and faster ways. In Natalie Y. Moore’s article “The Rule of Thumbs: Love in the Age of Texting," she explains how the use of texting it is slowly destroying the love between two people (Moore, 1). Although, some people might agree with Moore points of view, when she argues that texting is killing romance and it should be reserved for some notifications, such as “I’m running late;” others might disagree with this idea
Text messaging has become a norm in our generation, as technology rapidly advances and gives way to more efficient forms of communication in a fast-paced world; and many are skeptical about the influence this new form of interaction is having on our society, especially with our younger generation. David Crystal, a professor at the University of Wales, writes “2b or Not 2b?” in support of text messaging. He insists, despite those who underestimate or negate the beneficial influence text messaging has on language proficiency, that “there is increasing evidence that [texting] helps rather than hinders literacy” and that the fairly recent form of communication has actually been around for a while and “is merely the latest manifestation of the human ability to be linguistically creative and to adopt language to suit the demands of diverse settings. In contrast, Jeffery Kluger argues in “We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging” that text messaging is rapidly becoming a substitute for more genuine forms of communication and is resulting in difficulty among young peoples of our generation to hold a face-to-face conversation, engage in significant nonverbal expression, and ultimately build effective relationships with family, friends and co-workers. Both writers’ present valid arguments, however, my personal experience with text messaging has led me to agree more with Crystal’s view on the matter. Text messaging is indeed having a positive effect on society by making frequent texters primarily aware of the need to be understood, as well as offering betterment of spelling and writing through practice, and reinventing and expanding on a bygone dimension of our language through the use of rebuses and abbreviations.
Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.
Nowadays, more individuals are previous the methodology of making telephone calls and are putting their fingers to great use to texting. Individuals assert that sending a texting is speedier and shabbier than making a call. Yes, if individuals are learned in the craft of messaging, possibly discussion could be speedier than a telephone call and can even be less exorbitant. Accommodation might be a gift, however excessively of a great thing is never perfect. In spite of the fact that telephone calls and messaging are to complete the same task, messaging can have earnest outcomes, for example: absence of true talks, improvement of standoffish conducts, and needed lingual authority discussion.
Since the Industrial Revolution, technology has permeated and become an integral part of our everyday lives. In fact, a life without technology seems almost impossible to imagine. Almost everyone, around the globe, has access to technology in one form or another. Consequently this type of technology has become ingrained into our culture. Its roots are so deep that it is now peculiar to see someone without a smartphone than with one. Consequently, smartphones and the Internet have radically changed the manner in which we communicate and how we communicate with one another. Our speech has metamorphosed so much from that of our grandparents that it almost seems like a foreign language due to the incorporation of slang and “text talk.” With the sudden surge of email, blogs, and instant messaging that occurred within the last couple of decades, the impact that technology has on our linguistics has become more pronounced. Technology has helped to bridge the gap between people by allowing us to communicate as easily as we breathe. On this note, one would think that the dawn of the Era of Technology would give birth to a renaissance of the English language but, instead, the converse is taking place. With such widespread prevalence of technology such as smartphones and computers, the degradation of the English language is a problem now more than ever.
Step onto any college campus and take a look around. You will find clumps of students standing around in circles, phones in hand, typing away. What is it they are doing? Texting. Ever since the first text message was sent in 1993, the use of text messaging as a means of communication has spread like wild fire, especially amongst the adolescent generation. And with this new form of communication a new language has appeared; text-speak, the shortening of common words into abbreviations and acronyms (Drouin 49). While texting and the text-speak language seem to have been welcomed by many, what affect is this new technology having on the way we communicate? Is it possible that texting is negatively affecting our ability to use formal written communication, or is this idea just a myth perpetuated by negative media attention? And what changes has texting brought to the way we communicate person-to person? Are these changes positive, negative, or perhaps a mixture of both?
Cell phones are among the most innovative gadgets of the 20th century. Traditionally, people relied on cumbersome methods to transmit information and data over long distance, which usually made the communication process ineffective and slow. The ability to communicate deferred from one society to another and some societies had advantage over others due to their superior methods of communication. It was problematic to send urgent messages due to the lack of reliable and fast techniques of communication. The cell phone invention solved most of these issues. It introduced a platform through which parties could communicate instantaneously regardless of their location or distance. In addition, the cell phone technology is globally accepted hence it is a uniform medium of communication, making it both fast and efficient in any given community. Moreover, cell phones opened up room for more technological in...
