The story starts with Matthew and Marrila Cuthbert who are unmarried siblings who live on a farm. Matthew is in his sixties and getting older, So both Marilla and Matthew agree on adopting a boy to help them on the farm. But a little surprise came, when Matthew went to pick up the boy there was a girl orphan waiting there instead named Anne. They later found out that the orphanage by mistake sent Anne to the Cuthberts instead of a boy. Marrila isn’t sold about keeping Anne, while Matthew thinks she’s a sweet talkative girl. Marilla deep down ends up enjoying Anne and decides to keep her. Anne struggles with social skills and school, but no one had ever taught her before right from wrong. An example of when Anne first struggled moving to the Green Gables was when she burst out yelling to Mrs. Rachel, Mrs. Rachel made fun of Anne’s red hair insulting her looks. Anne tries very hard to please Marilla with her social skills although many times she struggles. Another example is when, Marilla, Anne, and Matthew were going to have over the new priests and his wife over for supper. Anne was very excited to have them over and specifically Mrs. Allan pastors wife to bake her a cake but instead of using vanila she accidentally uses liniment making the cake turn into a disaster. Anne never had a real true friend until she met Diana her neighbor. Diana and Anne became very close and became “bosom” friends. One day Anne had Diana over for tea and accidently gives her currant wine instead of rasberrry cordial. Diana goes back home drunk because she drank the currant wine. Diana’s mother believes that Anne purposely intoxicated Diana. Because of this Diana was not allowed to see Anne anymore. But one day Dianas brothers got sick with croup. Even the way she talked to people would intrigue me. Anne was out there she was a free soul and expressed her feelings. “Life is worth living as long as there's a laugh in it.” -Anne. I think the author wanted us to realize that we should laugh more and worry less. This made me realize to be cheerful, laugh, and be joyful. “Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing. chapter 35” This really stood out to me, I think this is something that we can all fit into our lives. I also think that this was one of the messages that the author wanted the reader to understand. I loved the book, It was very interesting and fun. I loved all the characters especially Anne she was a free spirit.
