There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.

In the story 'Two Kinds'; by Amy Tan, we are shown the struggles of a young girl Jing-Mei. Her struggle is that of a young girl growing up and trying to find her own sense of identity. Her troubles are compounded by her mother, who convinces her that she can become someone important. Because of her mother's constant overbearing behavior, Jing-Mei does everything she can to annoy and displease her mother even to the point of being a failure. This fight to find her own identity against her mother's wishes shows how parents cannot control their child's life; they can only point them in the right direction and let them make their own choices.
The purpose of an example essay is to allow your readers to feel your position on the topic. The writer uses examples to illustrate to the reader a specific situation. Examples can come from experiences or can be made up. By setting an example the writer gives the reader a visual image to help the readers understand the point of view trying to be expressed. Writers that use examples tend to have better essays because readers can relate more when being put into perspective. Examples are used to make clear and keep the reader’s attention and are necessary in essay writing.
In the essay “Everything Now” Signs of Life in the USA: Readings on Popular Culture for Writers, author Steve McKevitt blames our unhappiness on having everything we need and want, given to us now. While his writing is compelling, he changes his main point as his conclusion doesn’t match his introduction. He uses “want versus need” (145) as a main point, but doesn’t agree what needs or wants are, and uses a psychological theory that is criticized for being simplistic and incomplete. McKevitt’s use of humor later in the essay doesn’t fit with the subject of the article and comes across almost satirical. Ultimately, this essay is ineffective because the author’s main point is inconsistent and poorly conveyed.
On a scale of 1-5, I would rate the book,“My life in black and white,” by Natasha Friend, as a 4. The book itself had an intriguing plot, however the end of the storyline felt rushed and almost seemed as if the author was indecisive in how to end the book. The plot consisted of a 15 year old teenage girl who had suffered from a nearly fatal car accident. Before the accident, she had what most would consider as a “perfect” life that consisted of gorgeous looks, being part of the popular crowd, and excelling in athletics. However, following the accident, her life was flipped upside down in the fact that half of her face was damaged in the accident, removing what beautiful looks she once had. The story unfolds describing her life after the accident
Carl Jung once said, “Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself, or from holding certain views which others find inadmissible.” Jung and Jonze together share the same idea about how people fail to communicate with others, and then they isolate themselves from society. The result is hopelessness and unhappy life, and that idea is also demonstrated clearly in the movie, Her. In Her movie by Spike Jonze, Theodore Twombly, an introverted man, falls in love with his female OS1, Samantha. Twombly is struggling to escape the loneliness during the divorce process with his wife, Catherine. His life gradually fades out until he meets Samantha,
In The Joy Luck Club, culture plays a crucial part in the conflict between mother and daughter. Tan takes advantage of her past family experiences to inspire her fictional novel based on maintaining Chinese heritage, along with the pertinent task of discovering ones true identity. Tan uses the mothers’ collections of stories and multiple points of views to display how the Chinese emigrant daughters’ immerse themselves in American culture while their mothers wish for them to maintain their Chinese heritage.
The past is something that most people tend to wish they can change. If someone asked another
Two words. Pet abandonment. How do you help prevent it? Only some people know. Pet abandonment is where human beings leave their animals out on the street so they starve to death or get killed by something. When the animal is found, it is usually found by a person who works at a pet shelter. The person takes them to a shelter where they can be taken care of until someone either adopts them or they reunite with their owner. Bu there are many problems with pet abandonment and many solutions for those problems. For example, Faye Carey is one person who helps prevent pet abandonment, but there are other ways to prevent it too.
I was deeply touched by this book. I found myself in tears as I read of the challenges and triumphs of the main character Melody. Due to the short period of time we had to read this book, I thought I would skim through it and try and find the main highlights to write this post. I found that after the first chapter, I was hooked and read the book in one sitting. I could not put the book down. That to me is a sign of an amazing writer and Sharon M. Draper is all of that, if not more. She speaks of her reason for writing this poignant and meaning story of a brilliant mind trapped in an uncooperative body on her website. Ms. Draper has a daughter who is disabled, and so she has first-hand experience in coping with the day-to-day challenges of parenting and loving a not so perfect child.
