Amir and Hassan seem to have a typical "best friend" and brotherly type of relationship, but fact is, their relationship is more complicated than it seems. The two boys have a relationship that is significantly different compared to the ordinary. Once the reader begins reading this novel, they realize that their friendship is not strong and it is one sided. Hassan has love for Amir and I believe his love for Amir grows unconditionally. This shows me that he understands Amir very well at the beginning of the kite tournament, when he assures Amir there is "no monster" and he should just fly his kite. Inside Hassan knows that Amir likes to feel superior to others, and when he teases Hassan for not knowing big words, so he endures Amir's teasing as a way of keeping the friendship going. For example, Amir tells Hassan to stop talking to him, after Amir throws Hassan with pomegranates and even after Amir accuses Hassan of stealing the watch, he still stays loyal to Amir, and tries to preserve their friendship.
