Amir and Hassan seem to have a typical "best friend" and brotherly type of relationship, but fact is, their relationship is more complicated than it seems. The two boys have a relationship that is significantly different compared to the ordinary. Once the reader begins reading this novel, they realize that their friendship is not strong and it is one sided. Hassan has love for Amir and I believe his love for Amir grows unconditionally. This shows me that he understands Amir very well at the beginning of the kite tournament, when he assures Amir there is "no monster" and he should just fly his kite. Inside Hassan knows that Amir likes to feel superior to others, and when he teases Hassan for not knowing big words, so he endures Amir's teasing as a way of keeping the friendship going. For example, Amir tells Hassan to stop talking to him, after Amir throws Hassan with pomegranates and even after Amir accuses Hassan of stealing the watch, he still stays loyal to Amir, and tries to preserve their friendship.

Because of Amir’s extreme desire to receive the attention and affection from Baba, he begins to subconsciously sacrifice his relationship with Hassan in order to fulfill his interests. However, as Amir continuously matures and begins to recognize his initial ignorant, detrimental actions towards Hassan, he no longer “worship” his father like he did in the past. This causes him to ensure a sense of independence because of his ability to quickly adapt to a completely new, unfamiliar environment and remain adamant on pursuing their own aspirations.
The relationship between Amir and Hassan is complicated because of the social pressures. In The Kite Runner, Hassan is a servant in Amir’s family, but Amir initially sees him as a friend, and the two are inseparable. Hassan is extremely loyal to Amir, and proves time and time again to be a valuable companion, but over time their friendship deteriorates. The social differences between Hassan, who is a Hazara, and Amir, who is a privileged Pashtun, create a source of conflict within their friendship as the two can never be truly equal. Due to this inequality, Amir expects Hassan to sacrifice for him, and it is this expectation that leads Hassan to much misery. Amir is a man who is haunted by the demons of his past. This is first shown in the opening lines of the novel “I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975. I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek. That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out.” (Hosseini pg.#) These opening lines of the novel foreshadow what is yet to come. You can see that Amir looking back at the past with an attempt to justify why he is the man he is today. The Kite Runner focuses on the relationship between two Afghan boys Amir and Hassan. Amir is a Pashtun and Sunni Muslim, while Hassan is a Hazara and a Shi’a. Despite their ethnic and religious differences, Amir and Hassan grow to be friends, although Amir is troubled by Hassan, and his relationship with his companion, one year his junior, is complex. Amir and Hassan seem to have a "best friend" type relationship. The two boys, Hassan and Amir, are main characters in the book titled, The Kite Runner. The two boys have a relationship that is significantly different compared to most. There are many different facets that distinguish the relationship the boys possess. The boys do write their names in a pomegranate tree as the "sultans of Kabul" (Kite Runner 27) but, their friendship is not strong and it is one sided. Hassan has love for Amir. He loves him like a brother. Hassan is exceedingly loyal to Amir. The relationship between the two boys is emotionally wearing and rather gloomy for the most part. The main reason for their complicated relationship is the fact that Amir is Pashtun, and Hassan is Hazara. The Afghan society places Hassan lower than Amir. Hassan is Amir's servant. The placement of Hassan in the Afghan society disenables Amir from becoming Hassan's true friend. Amir sees Hassan as lower than human. Amir ruins the chance for friendship between himself and Hassan because he is jealous of Hassan, he thinks of Hassan as a lower human, and because Amir possesses such extreme guilt for what he has done to Hassan. Amir is an unforgivable person overall.
Amir is, to be put bluntly, a coward. He is led by his unstable emotions towards what he thinks will plug his emotional holes and steps over his friends and family in the process. When he sought after Baba’s invisible love, Amir allowed Hassan to be raped in an alleyway just so that the blue kite, his trophy that would win his father’s heart, could be left untouched. In the end, he felt empty and unfulfilled with the weight of his conscience on his shoulders comparable to Atlas’ burden. Unable to get over his fruitless betrayal, he lashes out and throws pomegranates at Hassan before stuffing money and a watch under his loyal friend’s pathetic excuse for a bed, framing Hassan for theft and directly causing the departure of both servants from his household. Even after moving to America, finding a loving wife, and creating a career for himself in writing, he still feels hollow when thinking of his childhood in Afghanistan. Many years later, he is alerted of Hassan’s death and sets out on a frenzied chase to find his friend’s orphaned son. He feels that he can somehow ease his regrets from all of those years ago if he takes in Hassan’s son, Sohrab. He finds Sohrab as a child sex slave for Assef, who coincidentally was the one to rape Hassan all of those years ago. With the combination of Amir learning of Hassan and Farzana’s death, leaving Sohrab and orphan, and seeing Hassan’s forgiveness and loyalty in this letter, he has no choice to try and fix up his broken past he had with Hassan through Sohrab. Because of Hassan’s loyalty, it was able to make Amir see that it was finally time to show some loyalty to Hassan and bring his own family together by collecting Sohrab, who is his own nephew. Together all of these quotes show some of the different acts of loyalty that different characters had shown throughout the book. If Hassan had not shown compassion, forgiveness and loyalty in his letter to Hassan, it most likely would not have mended their friendship and brought together their family. All relationships in the world whether it is family or friends, need to have a strong base of loyalty shown from both sides, in this novel, it tells about the different relationships and different acts of loyalty different characters had shown, which in the end helps bring family and friends back together. This can be a real life lesson to always be loyal to close friends and family because in the future
Amir committed several terrible acts against his servant "friend," Hassan, in Khaled Hosseini's novel “The Kite Runner”. It is true that Amir never fully accepted Hassan as an equal or as a friend or as a member of the household. This is an additional guilt with which Amir has had to live. But the two specific acts for which Amir feels guiltiest concern, one was Hassan's rape at the hands of Assef; and the second Amir's planting of money and a watch in Hassan's room and then claiming that they have been stolen. On the other side Baba, who betrayed his friend Ali, by having relationship with wife and also a child. The child was none other than Hassan. He never confronted the truth and felt guilty about it every
