I chose the article, “An exploratory analysis of the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale in male prison inmates” (Smith et al., 2013). In this article, a study is presented, in which inmates are given various scales/questionnaires to self-report life events that could cause them to contemplate or attempt suicide. “Worldwide, suicide is the leading cause of death in prison inmates and accounts for half of the deaths in prisons” (Smith et al., 2013). Due to there not being any studies on the theories behind suicide and prison inmates, this study used the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale on a select number of inmates. Other tests/measurements used were Painful and Provocative Life Events Scale, the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (Smith et al., 2013).

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, African Americans are more likely to be incarcerated compared to any other major ethnic groups (2010). One of the crucial problems or challenges experienced within prison is the need to provide appropriate mental health treatment services for the applicable diagnosis (U.S. Department of Justice 2011). However, these diagnoses are often skewed or directly influenced by race or an inmate’s racial background forming stigmas toward seeking out treatment among the other inmates. Stigma and race correlated with mental health diagnosis in a penitentiary or correctional facility continues to be a prevalent or widespread obstacle that leads to negative attitudes about mental treatment and ultimately deterring individuals who need services from seeking medical or psychiatric care.
In order to effectively break the cycle of crime and poverty that many individuals in the county jail system are victimized by due to unresolved psychological issues (such as trauma), we must work to treat and rehabilitate those incarcerated. The importance of reentry treatment for trauma issues of inmates is deeply enmeshed in evidence based practice and trauma informed practice. There is a direct correlation between trauma treatment for inmates and lowered recidivism. In order to ensure that there is a lower incidence of reoffence it is imperative to explore the root precipitant of the offenses. This is a serious problem, and the therapy/rehabilitation that prison systems have do not always help those who are mentally ill. In this paper I will explain how life in prison differs for a female as for a male. I will explain how they differently deal with the situation of being incarcerated and how it affects them both. I will show how the number of incarcerated male and female inmates has gone up throughout the years. I will talk about the challenges and rewards officers face when working with male and female inmates. I will also incorporate the different type of organizations and programs the criminal justice system offers to help them. I will include examples throughout my research paper of both, female and male, to show how they are different.
Prison has been around in human society for many millions of years. Having someone who disobeyed the law of that village, town, city or country punished in some form of institution, cutting them off from people, is a common concept – a popular and supposedly “needed” process society has taken to doing for many years now has been put under the spotlight many times by many different figures and people in society. Quantitative research has two main types of sampling used, probabilistic and purposive. Probabilistic sampling is when there is equal chance of anyone within the studied population to be included. Purposive sampling is used when some benchmarks are used to replace the discrepancy among errors. The primary collection of data is from tests or standardized questionnaires, structured interviews, and closed-ended observational protocols. The secondary means for data collection includes official documents. In this study, the data is analyzed to test one or more expressed hypotheses. Descriptive and inferential analyses are the two types of data analysis used and advance from descriptive to inferential. The next step in the process is data interpretation, and the goal is to give meaning to the results in regards to the hypothesis the theory was derived from. Data interpretation techniques used are generalization, theory-driven, and interpretation of theory (Gelo, Braakmann, Benetka, 2008). The discussion should bring together findings and put them into context of the framework, guiding the study (Black, Gray, Airasain, Hector, Hopkins, Nenty, Ouyang, n.d.). The discussion should include an interpretation of the results; descriptions of themes, trends, and relationships; meanings of the results, and the limitations of the study.
