There are many reasons as to why someone would take their life but the most common are depression, stress, or substance abuse. Dentist have to manage many things that can be very stressful on a daily basis, Randy Lang. DDS, D.Ortho has reasons why suicide rate in dentist are very high, and one can conclude that stress and depression is why the suicide rate in dentists is very high. Many people suffer from depression and other mental and physical illnesses but it is more prevalent in dentist.

DDS, D.Ortho is an orthodontist and degree in dental surgery. He believes isolation plays a huge roll as to why dentist become depressed. They tend to work alone which cause them to feel isolated and have no body to talk to their problems about. When people can vent and talk to others that can be very helpful in a stressful situation and sometimes even make the issue go away. Someone else’s perspective on a problem can make a person take a step back and realize that the problems they are dealing with may not be as bad as they seem. Another reason he states is stress of perfection. Dental school stresses perfection and once people graduate and become dentist they do not realize that they cannot always be prefect. When patients complain about the service they received the dentist feels like he/she has failed. When a dentist’s schedule gets messed up they usually try to fix it as fast as they can and that can lead to them skipping breaks during the day and skipping meals which is very bad for the body. In order for a person to be mentally and physically at their best at all times they must eat. Dentist have been taught that they must be perfect for so long that when they actually aren’t they get stressed and depressed. The American schooling system could be one to blame for this problem. Kids in their early to mid-twenties should not have to come out of college over $200,000 in debt, that is ridiculous. The amount of pressure that person has on their shoulders is more than anyone should have on them at their age. Once they start their practice they are basically forced to succeed instantly and if they do not then that’s when the stress and depression sets in. When that happens it is hard to recover when isolated. Dentists should try coping with their problems with talking to a professional psychologist. This will allow them to figure out steps to get themselves together and get back on the right track to be successful. Dental school also should stop stressing perfection so much. It is not ok to teach them that they can mess up all the time but pushing perfection is too much. Nobody is perfect no matter what profession they are in, everyone makes mistakes, it is part of life. Teaching them that it is ok to make mistakes sometimes may take a little stress off of them, which will allow them to perform better, then can lead to less stress, and eventually less suicides in
