Substance abuse not only have emotional impact the abuser, but it also affects the family unit. Because the influence of substance hampers the parent ability of parenting can impact the family unit. Substance abuse and effect on the family is a problem that impacts society on multiple levels. Helping families with this issue, there was a need for policies, theoretical frameworks, interventions, and challenges was a reason development of Child Protection Sevices(CPS). CPS is a government agency that understands the issue while attempts to help families that are dealing with substances.
Description of Field Practicum Setting and Client Services CPS is to protect children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation by involving clients, families and communities. To meet this mission, Texas Department of Family (DFPS) has a division within the state and local level social service. In this division, child protection services (CPS) are the center of the efforts in protecting children. Child abuse and neglect have many compound problem, and CPS have a challenging responsibility to make sure the child(s) are safe. CPS investigates allegations once they receive a report. The parental substance is identifying as a threat that influence for child maltreatment and child welfare involvement in the family (Hanson, Sel-Brown, Fricker-Elhai, & Kilpatrick, 2006).
