Reviewing

Reviewers of the book “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin show mixed reviews. Chopin portrays this particular book as a type of crude thriller in which a character “Edna” ends up committing suicide. Most of the reviews come off as being extremely critical of the main character Edna and Robert. They portray Edna as being weak and helpless. This is in a way true, however many underlying issues play a huge role in this negative bias against Edna. You will see how other characters such as Robert negatively affect Edna Pontellier and vice versa.
Interestingly enough the first two reviewers seem to tell different stories. A reviewer by the name of C.L. Deyo responded very critically about Robert. In one instance the reviewer is bashing Roberts career by saying “brokers deal in stock, not hearts.” (Deyo) This is a pretty abrupt thought and is said without any other detail of Robert. H.S. Stone & Co., Chicago responds to Robert in a non-critical way, which balances the character out. Stone says “When Robert goes to Mexico, ostensibly for business reasons, but really to get away from her, she gets tangled up with another man.” (H.S. Stone & Co., Chicago) Robert was shown trying to just relax while Edna goes off and screws around. These two reviews show two very opposing viewpoints.

The Globe goes onto say, “walks out into the water until she can walk to farther, and then swims on into eternity, one thinks that her very suicide is in itself a prayer for deliverance from the evils that beset her, all of her own creating.” The reader could think optimistically or pessimistically based off their morals.
In conclusion, the reviews based off of “The Awakening” were not detailed enough. Mostly every time a reviewer wrote about a specific character, they would not give evidence as to why they thought that way. This shows that throughout the book the reviewer created a negative bias and for that reason the character will get a bad review. Some reviews seemed to be extremely critical of why Chopin would write such a piece. Overall, the reviewers showed both sides of Edna and Robert which is what needed to happen.
