From the 24th of May until the 1st of July, I will be traveling to Rome to study Italian and American cinema. My studies will compliment my full immersion into the Italian society. For the duration of the trip I will be staying in apartments near the American University of Rome campus, the campus where I will be taking my classes, and I will be living like a local. In addition to my course work, I will explore Italy through planned group excursions to Florence and Pompeii and through individually planned activities. However, this program is more than just a trip to another country; it is the potential for me to expand my understanding of the world, the way that I look at films, and the way that I go about filmmaking.
Dr. Bernardi, a Film Studies professor at Arizona State University, is one of the faculty members that will be leading the trip. Because I have had Dr. Bernardi for a class in the past, I can say with confidence that the courses will adhere to the strong academic standards of ASU. This program offers itself as a natural extension to current and future classes, because it will refine my ability to search for deeper meanings within films, to study characters, and to better understand elements of story.
Therefore, it is understandable that the prospect of spending a month studying film excites me. From the perspective of one who is eager to learn about the Italian culture, I will be watching for cultural differences in the scenes and characters Italian film. Details such as the portrayal of women and people of minority ethnicities, or the use of comedy can speak volumes about the culture. Studying abroad in Italy promises to be an unforgettable experience. The opportunity to live in an apartment while in Rome is unique because most people would have to stay in a hotel while visiting. Because I will be shopping and eating where locals do, the opportunity to live in an apartment while in Rome presents itself as an opportunity to greater understand the Italian culture. It is clear that the courses that I will be taking are going to challenge me to be more aware of the Italian culture, to watch films more critically, and to become a better filmmaker. This scholarship would allow me to worry less about working and to concentrate on studying in my classes and producing the best film projects that I possibly can.

The purpose with this paper is to study and compare two different directors, and to compare and contrast the two different works. How are they working with their movies and how do they use mise-en-scene? By studying two different directors that uses different techniques when making movies, we are going to find out how important mise en scene really is, and how it affects the movie.

During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical Hollywood and post-Classical Hollywood. Although these terms refer to theoretical movements of which they are not definitive it is my goal to show that they are applicable in a broad way to a cinema tradition that dominated Hollywood production between 1916 and 1960 and which also pervaded Western Mainstream Cinema (Classical Hollywood or Classic Narrative Cinema) and to the movement and changes that came about following this time period (Post-Classical or New Hollywood). I intend to do this by first analysing and defining aspects of Classical Hollywood and having done that, examining post classical at which time the relationship between them will become evident. It is my intention to reference films from both movements and also published texts relative to the subject matter. In order to illustrate the structures involved I will be writing about the subjects of genre and genre transformation, the representation of gender, postmodernism and the relationship between style, form and content.
The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. They have and individual style and control over all elements of production, which make their movies exclusively unique. If you could put a finger on who the director of a movie is without even seeing the whole film, then the person that made the movie is most likely an auteur director. The aim of this report is to discuss Italian Neorealism (Neorealismo); looking at how the movement played a significant element in European cinema during and after the times of Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime. The report not only looks at how but why Neorealism became a growing phenomenon for filmmakers during its debatable 10 year period, and what implication of messages these Neorealist directors were trying to send out through their films. Backed up by several reliable book sources, the evidence for this report will also highlight the influences Neo-realism has created in modern filmmaking today.
One of the most influential Italian cinemas film directors was Federico Fellini, who became popular after World War II. The filmography of Fellini included 24 titles; of which won him five Academy Awards including the most Oscars in history for best foreign language film (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Federico Fellini’s influences have became such an integral part of the film industry, that some of his influences are barely even credited to him in todays society such as the word “paparazzi” which originated in his film La Dolce Vita, and became the word it means today. Also high schools across the America stage perform the Broadway musical comedy Sweet Charity, which was based on the Fellini film Nights of Cabiria, which was a film about an eternally optimistic Roman prostitute (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Fellini started out as a documentary-style realist in the Neorealism movement but soon developed his own distinctive style of autobiographical films that imposed dreamlike or hallucinatory imagery upon ordinary situations and portrayed people at their most bizarre state (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Federico Fellini was a significant directors in the Neorealism movement in his early career but later left Neorealism behind and created a new style of film that’s influences are still seen today and are prominent in film and other artistic pieces of work.

Movies take us inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves and to places different from our routine surroundings. As humans, we always seek enlargement of our being and wanted to be more than ourselves. Each one of us, by nature, sees the world with a perspective and selectivity different from others. But, we want to see the world through other’s eyes; imagine with other’s imaginations; feel with other’s hearts, at a same time as with our own. Movies offer us a window onto the wider world, broadening our perspective and opening our eyes to new wonders.
This study was inspired by a question posed by an Italian journalist to Alberto Barbera, director of the Venice Film Festival. During the annual festival's press conference the journalist asked if, according to Barbera, film festivals were still necessary. Obviously due to his position, the director gave a positive answer; but his direct and hasty statement did not come across to me as quite convincing.
