There are some words that are simply not associated with one another very often. Some examples include: pizza and disgusting, war and happiness, Marilyn Monroe and ugly. Another combination of words that could be added to this list is ‘women and psychopaths’. The women that many men call psychopaths for wanting them to settle down not withstanding, there is very little association with women and psychopathy. This statement is not only true for the general public, but is also true for experts in the fields of personality disorders. In recent years there has been a keen interest from psychologists in the study of the broad field of psychopathy. However, this interest has been pursued mostly in the male population. The reasoning here is ASPD has many outward displays with which to classify the disorder, while psychopathy has considerably less observable features (Cleckley, 1976). The DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for ASPD include two separate but major components. First amongst this criteria, a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of others since the age of fifteen, and second, the presence of a conduct disorder which must be prior to age fifteen. Another disorder that at one point was thought to be a single construct as psychopathy is Machiavellianism. While there is a considerable overlap in the structure of Machiavellianism and psychopathy, the two differ in heritability, and other research specifies them as overlapping yet distinct disorders (Paulhus & Williams, 2002; Williams & Paulhus, 2004). Machiavellianism is classified by interpersonal strategies that promote the use of deception, manipulation and the exploitation of others (McHoskey, Worzel, & Szyarto, 1998). The Machiavellian individual is also a successful manipulator characterized by the four distinct traits: (1) lack of interpersonal affect interpersonal relationships, (2) lack of concern with conventional morality, (3) lack of gross psychopathology, and (4) low ideological commitment (Christie 1970).
