The word “why” has always been a motive for my learning. The zeal to know more helped me frame my targets and reach the goals of my career so far. I have been blessed to have parents who instilled me with good values and principles. They have supported me in accomplishing the goals I have set forth. To excel in the futuristic workplace of tomorrow, one will need to possess a perfect blend of theoretical study and practical experience. I want to be a part of the existing race to create a more scientifically advanced tomorrow and I envision graduate studies as a path towards my advancement in this direction.
My horoscope has been the defining element of my life. I was very young when I came to know that my sun sign is cancer and the only knowledge I had then was that cancer is a disease. The biggest question of my childhood was whether my sun sign is named after a disease or a disease is named after my sun sign. => this paragraph seems to be irrelevant
Educated at one of the best schools, I was exposed to diverse subjects, but it was biological sciences that interested me the most and created an urge to achieve and prove myself among the greats in the history of science and medicine in particular. At the school level, though exposed to only major concepts of biology, the terms like cell, genes, DNA, intrigued me a lot and I always wondered how exactly a gene will look like.
From my school days I developed a special flair towards biology and it is that interest that has persuaded me to take Biology as one of my subjects in my 12th grade and Human Genetics as the major in my under graduate studies. As a person with a sense of resp...

It is my strong belief that graduate study is indispensable for acquiring a deep understanding and insight in to the subject. Graduate study will not only provide me with advanced knowledge about the field, but also prepare me to become a good researcher. It is preciously this reason that prompted me to take up graduate studies as the next step towards my career objective. I had decided to pursue M S Degree and involve myself actively in research and development work. My ultimate in life is to be part of research teem, which will contribute for the benefit of mankind. This can be achieved by pursuing specialization in a particular field and moving ahead with the research
My first experience with genetics in a lab setting was in my AP Biology class, where we worked with recombinant plasmids. Because I so thoroughly enjoyed that learning experience, I went online to look at the various applications of genetics, discovering how a world of possibilities still lies in the near future in the field of genetics. DNA is the code for all life as we know it, and now that we have the capability to manipulate it, the applications for genetic biotechnology in tackling genetic diseases and mutations are unbounded. This prospect truly excites me because of its potential to help others. I aspire to be able to help others with the work and research I perform in the field of genetics in the future.
Biology literally means "the study of life". Biology is such a broad field, covering the minute workings of chemical machines inside our cells, to broad scale concepts of ecosystems and global climate change. Biologists study intimate details of the human brain, the composition of our genes, and even the functioning of our reproductive system. Biologists recently all but completed the deciphering of the human genome, the sequence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) bases that may determine much of our innate capabilities and predispositions to certain forms of behavior and illnesses. DNA sequences have played major roles in criminal cases (O.J. Simpson, as well as the reversal of death penalties for many wrongfully convicted individuals), as well as the impeachment of President Clinton (the stain at least did not lie). We are bombarded with headlines about possible health risks from favorite foods (Chinese, Mexican, hamburgers, etc.) as well as the potential benefits of eating other foods such as cooked tomatoes. Informercials tout the benefits of metabolism-adjusting drugs for weight loss. Many Americans are turning to herbal remedies to ease arthritis pain, improve memory, as well as improve our moods. Can a biology book give you the answers to these questions? No, but it will enable you learn how to sift through the biases of investigators, the press, and others in a quest to critically evaluate the question. To be honest, five years after you are through with this class it is doubtful you would remember all the details of meatbolism. However, you will know where to look and maybe a little about the process of science that will allow you to make an informed decision. Will you be a scientist? Yes, in a way. You may not be formally trained as a science major, but you can think critically, solve problems, and have some idea about what science can and cannoit do. I hope you will be able to tell the shoe from the shinola.
The circadian rhythm keeps an organism’s body in sync with night and day in order to keep the body systems in order. The word circadian comes from the latin word circa diem, which means about a day (JCI). It was first identified in 1729 by Jean Jacques d’Ortuous de Marian, a french astronomer, geophysicist, and more importantly, a chronobiologist. Chronobiology is a type of science that examines the natural phenomenons and rhythms such as the circadian rhythm (Serendip). He was born on November 26, 1678 and died on February 20, 1771. With his interest in chronobiology, the study of day and night’s effects on living organisms, he proved the existence of circadian rhythm in plants. To come to this conclusion, he observed that the a type of plant, the Mimosa pudica, still opened its leaves during the day and closed them at night when put in a completely dark environment. With this shocking discovery, he “concluded circadian rhythms persist[s] without environmental cues” (The Guardian).
I was fascinated with the evolution of the human body and all of the functions and properties that goes into the body to make it function properly. I actually was interested in becoming a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. I was so fascinated with testing specimens and doing a bacteriological diagnostic analyses. However, as time went on I started losing interest with testing specimens and didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I was ‘stuck in a rut’ you could say. I didn’t know if I wanted to pursue biology or what I wanted to do with my life. When my grandmother became ill, I spent two weeks in the hospital with her, watching over her, helping the nurses take care of her. It was a hard moment for me and my family. I can’t explain it but spending the two weeks in the hospital and watching the doctors help my grandmother and making her as comfortable as possible, it made me realize what I wanted to pursue my career in Medicine.
Genetics has always been a science grounded on a natural human curiosity; as has medicine. These are two subjects bold enough to question why organisms are what they are. One could even say that perhaps science is the offspring of philosophy; man had a question and demanded an answer, so he discovered it himself. These answers, however, were not obtained without immense sacrifice, for time has required a heavy libation. For years, the substantial secrets have slowly seeped from time’s hands in small modicums of information. Though such an exchange is indeed far from equivalent; despite all the time it’s taken, we are the benefactors of this compromise. With this enlightenment, we’ve been able to save countless lives and improve our world for
I yearned to know more, thus I enrolled in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics this year. One topic that has intrigued me is heredity and the inner workings of human genetics. Specifically, I am captivated by the idea of genetic engineering and creating humans with ideal traits. This captivation has led me to devote large portions of my time into the fields of technology/engineering and biology, as seen in my extracurricular involvement. I am the co-founder and co-president of Woburn’s Neuroscience club, which focuses on preparing students for the University of Toronto Brain Bee competition.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
