The workshop took place in a classroom with all participants seated at table in the shape of a U, with Lavoie in the center to direct the workshop. The workshop’s participants included parents of a child with a learning disability, teachers, a college counselor, social workers, and a chemical engineer, and even students with a learning disability. The participants were from different backgrounds and came together to experience the difficulties of trying to learn with a learning disability which is what their loved ones, students, or friends must encounter every day.
Lavoie started the workshop by letting the participants know that he is not intending on hurting their feelings with the workshop and if they did not want to participate they would not have to. Each participant was provided with a workbook and would be called on individually to answer questions given by Lavoie who was pretending to be a classroom teacher. The workshop began by the participants focusing on the pictures in the workbook and answering the questions Lavoie quickly gave them. ...avoie provided changed my mindset for the term of using “fair” in the classroom. Each student in the classroom is unique and should be given the resources they desperately need in order to achieve academic success. Some students may not need such resources in order to reach their full potential, but not all students are the same. Each person learns differently and it is our responsibility as educators to make sure we are providing our students with the materials they need in order to successfully learn. I highly recommend this video for all educators, parents, and even individuals to watch in order for them to understand how difficult it is for people with learning disabilities to complete their everyday tasks. This workshop reminds me that everyone is different and unique and we often forget that others are fighting struggles we often may not know they are fighting.
