Because of the progress in the developments of social media and technology, communication, news dissemination, social weather surveys and many others have also been improved. Social media has helped communicating with people much easier. Through social media sites, we could easily get in touch with friends and family members no matter the distance. It also makes it easy for people to get updated with recent happenings. Because of these benefits social media has to offer, more users engage in using these social media sites. Although it makes communication easier, it does have its negative effects to its users. This study aims to know the students’ perspective on social media and its impact to the development of their social relationships
For a long time since the dawn of Social media, there have been series of developments for the enhancement of communication, news dissemination, social weather surveys and many others. Social media refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks (Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia). The assistance and convenience that Social media is offering to communities or larger groups of people have found its way to popularity. Virtual communities are social aggregations that emerge from the Net when enough people carry on those public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling to form webs of personal relationships (Rheingold, 1993).
Social media together with the technological developments of the twentieth century have transformed social relationships, which once were cultivated and maintained in face-to-face contact but often are now mediated electronically (Gergen, 2008). Through the technologies of the century, the number and variety of relationships in which we are engaged are steadily increasing (Erman, William, Shauf, 1997). Communication and social relationships have been affected because of Social media and technological developments.
There are some negative effects of Social media to the development of social relationships just as there are beneficial effects. It is evident how we substitute social networking activities for traditional social behaviors and that our real-life social networks are shrinking and becoming less diverse as we cluster into and communicate with groups of trusted, like-minded others (Dellner, 2011). From this point of view, rather than singing the praises of online community, we should be worried that this alternative to an increasingly difficult real world will have deleterious consequences on morality and ethics off-line (Robins, 1995).
Because people, through the use of Social media, are building communities, they become less and less involved in personal interactions.

The purpose of this research is to understand and see through the students’ perspective on social media and its impact to the development of social relationships. This research will undertake the different effects of social media’s progress in the advancing world of technology to the users. More knowledge on this topic would provide better awareness of beneficial and negative effects for the many users of social media.
People who rely and spend a lot of time on social media sites for communication tend to think that they really know who they’re talking to and that they are friends with them even though they may really not be. They don’t know the person they’re talking to on social media sites that much but people think that they know them and that they can consider themselves as friends but in some instances it’s not always true. In some cases, people loose relationships with a good friend because of misunderstanding through social media and because of that, they can see the negative effects of social media as a way of communicating with friends or people. Even though others lost connections with someone they know, some saw the positive effects of social media as a means of communication. According to Morgan, M. p.2 “People can become reckless when using social media, especially when it comes to real-time relationships.” Morgan is saying that some people become irresponsible when they’re using social media, because if you’re spending too much time on social media it may affect your real-time relationship and it may be a result of a negative effect of social media in relationships.
According to what Morgan, M. said “Core relationships now have a lot more threats because people have an easier way to get in touch with people from their past.” It seems like relationships can be affected in a negative way because they can keep in touch with the previous people that they have met and it may affect the core relationship and create a misunderstanding. Also on what Morgan, M. said “Divorce cases have been reported to risen due to social-networking related reasons.” Because of social media, relationships end up with divorce and it continues to rise as social media continues to develop and spread. It is considered a negative effect of social media because it brings couples to the point that they have to file a divorce because of social-networking related reasons.
Jain, R. (2012) said that “Social media is definitely another distraction from primary relationships. You see that when people are talking on Facebook, not to their partner, who is with them right in the same room.” Social media can be a cause of conflicts between partners because of the improper and irresponsible use of it. People nowadays isolate themselves from oral or personal communication because of the existence or development of social media as a way for communicating. They even spend more time in front of their mobile phones or computers rather spending time with their family or friends face-to-face.
With the advanced technology and social media that people have nowadays, the number of relationship that are made are steadily increasing. With the help of social media, some even managed to gain friends and have relationship with the use of social media. It only means that social media sites can also have a positive effect in building relationships. Over the internet, it is easier to manipulate things like dating, even if people were dating multiple people all at once. This may seem as a positive and negative effect because with the use of social media dating is easier and can be done without hassle, but this has a negative effect because people can date multiple people all at once and this means that the person is not serious in starting a relationship with the help of social media.
In social media, people always have time for conversations, thus with a busy schedule and even if you are tied up with different errands, there is a space provided for interaction through networking. With the use of social media people who are busy still can find time to use social media and can still keep in touch with their friends with the help of social media. Even if they have lots of things to do there will always be time and space for social networking and that is a big help for people who can’t find time in personal or face-to-face communication.
According to Haythornthwaite, K. (2010) “The rapid development and widespread use of online technologies are creating ties that bind for offline communities.” This is another benefit from social media because with the continuous development of social media or online communication people can now connect or interact with the persons that they can communicate with offline. They can exchange information if needed and they can communicate without going through a rough time. They can see the positive effects of the development of social media because it keeps them updated about what is happening around them that they are unaware of when they’re offline. Jones Jr., R. (2013) also said that “These extended networks serve important purposes, where new opportunities come in, new friends and new experiences.” Social media helps in gaining new friends and let them experience things they haven’t experienced before. It opens you for new friendship and a new or a better life. Opportunities can come with the help of social media and people may think it’s impossible but with the advance or developed social media or technology it’s possible to be able to communicate with people that are far from where the person is.
Cyberspace is slowly replacing the real world. Pertierra R. (2007) The social media is slowly conquering and taking over the classic way of communicating which is through face-to-face interaction. People spend more time in communicating through the use of social media instead of physical interaction and as a result it is continuously replacing what we know as the real or physical world. Today people are becoming more and more isolated as they increasingly engage with their computers and mobile devices. Dellner, T. (2011). Users nowadays are becoming more and more close to social media which results in people staying away from physical interaction and spends more time in social networking.
At only public place with an internet connection, we sit by ourselves, digesting media along with our coffee and scores, or engaging in communication with perhaps thousands of friends or connections-just not the person seated across the table. Dellner, T. (2011) Users disregards the persons who is seated with them and focus more on social media rather than interacting with them personally.
Many people are nowadays are participating and considering themselves part of internet communities. Some have strong connections and feelings invested into online groups, such as mailing lists, chat rooms, usenet newsgroups, MOO’s, and MUD’s. Jones, S. (1998). People trust more users in social media rather than personal friends because in social media they can still communicate with them even if they are far away from each other.
Graph 1 shows that 30.77% of the respondents are from the College Department Cite, 26.92% from CEAS, 21.15% from CIHTM, 17.31% from CBEAM, and 3.85% are outsiders.
Graph 2 shows that 37 out of 52 respondents, or 71.51% always visit Facebook, 26 out of 52or 50% always visit Twitter, 17 out of 52 or 32.69% always visit Instagram, another 17 respondents or 32.69% always visit YouTube and only 5 respondents or 9.62% always visit Tumblr. 15 out of 52 or 28.85% of the respondents say that they use Facebook less frequently, another 28.85% of the respondents say that they use twitter sometimes, 11 of the 52 or 21.15% of the respondents claim that they use Instagram less frequently, while 23 out of 52 or 44.23% of the respondents sometimes visit YouTube and 7 out of 52 or 13.46% of the respondents visit Tumblr less frequently.
None of the respondents claim that they visit Facebook rarely, while 4 out of 52 or 7.59% of the respondents rarely visit Twitter. 8 out of 52 or 15.38% of the respondents say that they rarely visit Instagram while 6 out of 52 or 11.54% of the respondents claim that they visit YoutTube rarely and 12 out of 52 or 23.08% say that they visit Tumblr rarely. 1 out of 52 or 1.92% of the respondents claim that they never visit Twitter and YouTube, while 6 out of 52 of 11.54% of the respondents say that they never visit Instagram, and lastly, 12 out of 52 or 23.08% of the respondents claim that they never visit Tumblr.
Table 1 shows why the respondents engage in using social media sites and that a big percentage of the respondents say it help them communicate with friends or people which has a frequency of 43. 22 out of 52, on the other hand said that they use social media sites because it makes interaction easier. Another reason to engage in using social media sites is that it keeps them updated with the happenings which obtained a frequency of 34 out of 52, while only 5 out of 52 respondents said that they use social media sites just because everyone else is using them.
Table 2 shows how the use of social media has affected their relationship with people and it shows that 39 out of 52 respondents say that they gained friends by using social media sites. 38 of the respondents say that it helps them keep in touch with old friends. Being more active in face-to-face interaction obtained 19 responses. 11 out of 52 respondents say that they have equal time for both social media sites and personal interactions. 6 of the respondents claim that there are more fond of their friends over the internet and another 6 of the respondents claim that they isolate themselves from face-to-face interactions by using social media sites, while 2 respondents say that they are not affected by the use of social media at all.
Social media is now widely used for businesses, advertising, news reports, and entertainment and mainly for communication. This study is about students’ perspective on social media and its impact to the development on social relationships. The study is conducted to be able to know the effects of the use of social media sites to the development of social relationships and also to core relationships. Based on the gathered information with the use of the questionnaires distributed to 52 respondents, social media affects the respondents’ social relationships in a positive way more than the negative way. They claim to have even gain friends after engaging in the use of these sites. Though it is believed that the usage of social media sites “evidently” has a bad effect to the user, based on the survey conducted, it is quite the opposite coming from the actual visitors of social media sites.
The researchers recommend this study to students of all levels who visit Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr and other social media sites. This research paper would help the students to manage their social relationships and will help them be more aware of the current states of their core relationships.
