Commitment is defined as the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc. What about when it comes to marriage? How many couples can you remember recently that have stayed loyal, monogamous, and committed to each other through the good times and the bad? More importantly, who was the last person to write a decent, honest song about the struggles and benefits of being in a loving marriage years into the relationship? Today’s music scene (especially hip-hop and rap), have butchered the ideals of real relationships and commitment for our younger generations. Most musicians that are men now-a-days have more commitment to their record labels, their “boys”, and their reputations, than they do to their girlfriends and wives. How are we as women supposed to feel if all we are doing is being objectified through music and trained to think we are supposed to act in a certain manner or only fill certain roles that we are “worthy” of in a relationship? Fortunately, there are quite a few women in the music industry that are proving that notion incorrect. Take Destiny Child’s song, “Independent” for example. The lyrics read, “Question: Tell me how you feel about this, try to control me boy you get dismissed, pay my own fun, oh and I pay my own bills. Always 50/50 in relationships.” I remember this song coming out and never having heard one like it before. Girls finally had a group of women to look up to and idolize; a group of women who made their own rules, made their own money, and held themselves at a higher standard than most men would hold them to.
