Before reading any of the articles that I will be discussing with you, I have always believed that not a lot of people had similar learning habits, let alone have a title for it. “Growth and fixed mindset” and struggling to succeed in areas you lack skills in is very common especially amongst Western cultures. As you read, you will see that in my story I had an experience where I came into a class with a fixed mindset and I left the school with a more mature concept, not fully developed and where I’d like it to be, but close enough!

I was assigned to read two articles, one named “Struggle for Smarts” written by Alix Spiegel and the other called “Brainology,” written by Carol S. Dweck. As I was reading Spiegel’s “Struggle for Smarts,” I was learning how different Eastern and Western cultures are. In the article, Spiegel explains how in Asian cultures, individuals see struggle as an opportunity for success, whereas American cultures see struggle as embarrassment and end up giving up. Stiggler attended a research teaching method in 1979, where he was to observe Japanese children. There was a particular student who was not understanding how to draw a three-dimensional cube on paper, all of his peers were able to do it, so the teacher asked if he can demonstrate it on the board. In America, that is way out of the ordinary because society has structured us to believe that if you do something wrong, it is something to be embarrassed or ashamed about, which leads to students not asking questions and not trying to complete their task. By the end of class, the student ended up being able to draw the cube after practicing and receiving the support he needed from his peers.

... middle of paper ... to my tutors and did all of the math problems, with no notes, and I felt really good about myself, even my teacher was shocked, but I am very proud that I did that and accomplished my goal because I proved her wrong; I know she was thinking that I was a “dumb” student who didn’t try. I wouldn’t say that after that experience, I had a growth mindset, but I definitely believe that I am in the middle of a fixed and growth mindset. Now when I don’t succeed at something, I always put my best foot forward.

Over the years, I genuinely hope to accomplish having a growth mindset because I would love to be able to do a task and not feel ashamed or embarrassed if I fail it. Both of the articles, “Brainology” and “Struggle for Smarts” have put me in a place where I now see failure as a chance to try and try until I am proficient in the task I am trying to complete.
