Instructions: The statement of purpose from the student must include the following: a clear statement of the goal or purpose of the proposed project, an explanation of the proposed project that will be understandable to an educated but general audience, a schedule for conducting/completing the proposed project within the designated period of time, a statement of what you will expect to gain by participating in the UTPB Undergraduate Research Program, and a detailed budget.
The goal of this project is to examine how measurements of cortical thickness and surface area of reading-related brain regions can be used to predict reading outcomes. Dr. Farris studies developmental dyslexia, which is a neurological disorder involving difficulties learning to read. For this project we are expanding on her existing research to obtain more precise measurements of brain structures in order to examine differences between children with and without dyslexia. Furthermore, we will also investigate how differences in surface area within reading-related brain regions are associated with variations in participant’s measured reading skills. By participating in the Undergrad Research Program I will aid Dr. Farris in reaching our goal of completing this study and employing the results to improve our understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of developmental dyslexia. My assistance will come in the form of manually inspecting and editing brain images before they are entered into group analyses.
