While the delay of tasks is sometimes prevalent among college students, procrastination is accompanied by internal discomfort and external discomfort. Internal discomfort can be from irritation, nervousness, anxiety, or regret. There is also external discomfort such as failure in academics, the loss of opportunities, stress in relationships, or increase of health risks (Rabin et al., 2011). The difference between procrastinators and non-procrastinators is that one group of students are more goal-oriented than another. College students who delay completing tasks also do not make use of internal and external signals to control when to start, maintain, and end goal-directed actions (Rabin et al., 2011). There are many ways to minimize the effects of procrastination among these individuals. Students that know to manage their emotions, gives them a sense of self-control that can lead to positive well-being.
There has not been a lot of research on how self-control and emotional well-being reduce procrastination in college students. In future studies, being able to measure college student’s self-control under pressure is pivotal in finding out how their emotional state impacts them. This will help in determining if students procrastinate even with self-control, as well as showing how their positive and negative emotional states plays a role in in their academic performance. Students with higher self-control and emotional well-being have lower levels of procrastination.
