Strengths are defined as a pre-existing capacity for a particular way of behaving, thinking or feeling that is authentic and energizing to the user, and enables optimal functioning, development, and performance. Growing up I began to notice some of the strength I possess and how they fall under certain themes. My main strengths consist of restorative, achiever, learner, responsibility, and individualization. However, every strength has a shadow side, or a negative effect, when used to the extreme. Finding a balance in my strengths and learning to use them in combination is a major key in being successful not only at HBU but in life.
More than half of my strengths fall under the executing domain, with those strengths being, restorative, achiever, and responsibility. These strengths signify that I like to get things done as soon as possible and also they resonate with me the most. The one that pairs the best with me is restorative because it highlights how I enjoy problem solving, my ability to recognize problems others can’t see, and how I can analyze situations and find the solution almost immediately. These might sound like all good traits, but they do have a shadow side, which is that you can become intrusive to others by always trying to solve their problem even though they never asked for your help. That can be annoying as most would imagine, but another strength that I have that has a less irritating shadow side is achiever. This strength involves having high stamina, being goal oriented, and enjoying being busy; all traits that I have. Also if needed, due to my strength individualization, I could set up a study group by picking people based on their unique abilities and use them to make the groups studying more effective. Coupled with being a learner, I would study more intensely in order for me to learn more and improve in any subject I’m struggling in.
Ultimately, through knowing, understanding and discovering ways to use my strengths, I will be able to do things more efficiently, and more effectively. By focusing on the things I do well, I’m able to use them to my advantage and accomplish more compared to giving my attention to my flaws by trying to repair them. My strengths define who I am, and explain why I do certain things and I will use them for the rest of my life to be successful here at HBU and in the distant future to wherever life takes me.
