From the Strategic Management of Practice Lecture, there are 4 forms of organizational configurations: Entrepreneurial, Bureaucratic, Professional and Innovative.
The entrepreneurial organization is a simple, flat structure. One or a few top managers hold decision-making power for the whole company. Compared with other types of organization, the entrepreneurial is more unstructured and informal. The single focus system makes the organization to be fast, flexible, and lean but has significant risk on decision making.
While the the bureaucratic organization is very formalized, which has many routines and procedures. The decision-making is centralized, and works are grouped by departments. The bureaucratic organization has a tight vertical structure that top managers have main control and other jobs are clearly defined to follow orders. The procedures are efficient but also have limitation openness to new viewpoints and inefficiencies in processes.
The professional organization is quite similar to bureaucratic organization. However, the difference is that in professional organizations workers are highly trained professionals who have specialized skills and demand control of their work. Rules and procedures keeps the efficiency but as the decision making is decentralized, the professional structure is the lack of control that there are problems of co-ordination.
A divisional organization has central headquarter supports numerous divisions which have their own structures and can make their own decisions. This structure is more common large and mature organizations with multiple business units and product lines, or operate in different geographical regions. In our office, the top management is small and there are few middle managers like principals and; and associates. Usually, when a project is coming in, a design group including directors, associates, architects and assistants will work as a team to provide a professional service. Each one will have their own task and managers will in charge of the overall operation and quality.
Compare to bureaucratic organization, the structure of this practice is more like individual professionals working within the organization to innovate and provide high-quality services. From what have be considered above, the conclusion is that the professional structure is most closely definition of my practice’s structure.
